Tutzil Nah Cottages: Simple but friendly at the edge of the wilderness

There are precious few places to stay near Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Refuge. In the park there are campgrounds (bring your own gear, and all your own food), and some rooms. Your best bet is to stay in the village of Maya Centre, and of the few places there, Tutzil Nah Cottages is a safe bet. The rooms are simple, part of a concrete structure, with a simple bathroom (PVC showerhead, no hot water), fan and bed. But it is affordable (US$22 a night), clean, and you feel almost part of the community, hearing kids playing down the street and chickens clucking the day away. And the three brothers who run the area can help you arrange trips into the park, which is the whole reason you're there anyway. So, while it is not the Ritz, it was still a comfortable 3-day, 2-night stay for us at Maya Centre.
