by valliejc

i am traveling to placencia january
16-23/2004.should i book ahead or wait unilt i get there for a better deal ?

I was in placencia in june. It is not a huge tourist spot as of yet except for fishermen. I do not think that hotels will be booked out, on the other hand i doubt that you will find great last minute deals either. We stayed at the miller's Lodge and found it comfortable. you can check them out at www.millerslanding.com. The rooms cost 70 per night. I suggest you eat at the purple space monkey and the other restarant near the soccer field. Jeremy Wittich

Um... Is Miller's Landing in Placencia, Belize? Their website says it's in California, USA....

Anyway, I was in Placenia, Belize in May and no need to make reservations at that time. Not sure about January, though. Hotels are pretty cheap unless you go for one of the resorts to the north of town. Our room was $40/night. There are some a bit cheaper, and others further north that are $100 and up. No need to spend that much, I think.

there might be a miller landing in Cali as well but there is a different millers landing in Placencia, Belize. I wrote that I stayed there!!!!

While you are staying at Miller's Landing (our friends and we were married by their pool), ask them to arrange for you to come see us at our caye (Whipray Caye) just 8 miles off the coast and have a cold beer on us!

Travel Tips for Placencia Village

The famous Marie Sharp hot sauce

by YolandaC

You will find Marie Sharp hot sauce in most restaurants and shops. The hotest of the hot come with a warning on the front and I think it best to heed it...but then I'm not the best judge as I'm a baby while it comes to spicy foods.

Sea Horse Dive Shop

by grandmaR

Brian Young is a local Belizian who had a very respected dive shop with local dive masters. The other dive shop which was run by New Yorkers and they were not appreciated by the local populace.

They also offer snorkeling, Mayan ruin, river tours, fishing etc. Whale shark tours are also one of their specialties. Brian's wife supplies lunch to those who don't want to bring their own.

It takes longer to get to the reef from Placencia than it does from the northern cayes. (Although going to the Blue Hole from Ambergris is an even longer trip.)

They have 3 boats. The main boat is a 33ft craft powered by twin 150 Yamaha outboards. This boat is capable of carrying 14 divers. That was the one we used as we had both divers and snorkelers. Brian himself was doing check-out dives at the beach.

The 25ft boat is powered by one 115 hp Evinrude and is capable of servicing four to six divers at one time. The smaller 19ft skiff is powered by a 85hp Yamaha outboard and is capable of carrying two to four divers for a more individualized dive experience. The two smaller boats are also outfitted for fishing and trips up the spectacular Monkey River. I rented a BC, fins and tanks. I brought my own mask, snorkel, regulator and dive computer.

Current rates are:
Wall Diving $75US includes 2 tanks, weights and weight belt ($65US without gear)
Canyon Diving $75US includes 2 tanks, weights and weight belt ($65US without gear)
Shark Hole $100US Includes 2 tanks, weights and weight belt (recommended for advance divers)
Whale Shark Diving $150.00US includes 2 tanks, weights and weight belt, tax, and lunch. PLEASE NOTE: This dive is recomended for advance divers or divers with 25 dives or more.
Faro Diving $75US includes 2 tanks, weights and weight belt. ($65US without gear)
Night Diving $75US includes 2 tanks, weights and weight belt. ($65US without gear)
Snorkeling $40US per person
8% tax additional on all trips.

The Galley is cool

by ShellyLe about The Galley Restaurant

The Galley is located right behind the football field, across the street from the Purple Space Monkey. It is a grand old house with a porch, which is where the tables are. They have wonderful entrees, especially great shrimp and steaks, and fantastic fruit milkshakes. Try the soursop, craboo or mango milkshakes. Try the deep fried shrimp, which are huge! The proprietor is a little daffy older lady who's sweet and funny. She'll feed you even later at night. The crowd is eclectic and there are only six tables outside, and when the football lights go out it's dark, but a very cool place. Great deep fried shrimp with rice and a mango milkshake. It's just great and inexpensive.

Classic Belizean food

by BergsFinest about Wendy's Restaurant & Bar

They serve all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). We went for breakfast and dinner. Both were outstanding meals for an inexpensive price. It is a smaller place, but incredible food. Also, they have A/C, so it is nice to get out of the Belizean heat and mosquito attacks. Wendy's special cheesy creole shrimp was outstanding

Best in Belize

by kimberlyfisher1 about Yoli's

If you are looking for the "Cheers" bar in Belize, head to Yoli's. The owner, Yoli, is a doll, and everyone you meet is so friendly and helpful. Located right on the water, you have an amazing view and the food and drinks are yummy...as are the prices!
