Long Bay Beach Resort: All-Inclusive

After A LOT of research, my husband and I decided to take our honeymoon at Long Bay Resort (all-inclusive) and it was AMAZING. The ocean was beautiful. There were some large rocks in the beach, which made swimming a little painful at points, but they also made gorgeous waves (which are hard to find in the Caribbean). The people at Long Bay were very friendly and accommodating. The room was well-kept and the pool was awesome. We went in the off season (July) so it felt like we practically had the entire resort to ourselves. My husband is not a strong swimmer, so we didn't take any excursions, but there are many that are offered. We did take a day trip to Smuggler's Cove (another beach on Tortola where the water was smooth as glass), which the resort completely arranged (complete with packed lunch and transportation). My husband and I had the perfect romantic and relaxing week and hope to return for our ten year anniversary.

All rooms at Long Bay have an ocean view. Our room was on the hillside so we had a gorgeous panaramic view from our balcony. There were three restaurants to choose from and the food was quite good. All the restaurants had superb views. One night, one of the restaurants offered a steel drum band as entertainment. The beach looked very natural as the hotel did not rent umbrellas - there were plenty of palm trees for natural shade. The beach was unique in the fact that it didn't feel like we were sitting next to a resort. We looked back and saw trees and mountainside instead of a 12 story building. I can't say enough about Long Bay.

Staying in the BVI

My family and I have been to the BVI's twice for two weeks a piece. These trips have by far been the best family trips that we have taken, and having everyone agree is saying something (I come from a rather large family). We didn't stay in any hotel or hostels, we rented a catamaran and toured the islands ourselves. I would completely reccomend doing this as opposed to staying somehwere on land, you get used to sleeping on the boat and can sleep either in the cabin or the open air, quite comfortably. The shower was what you would expect ona boat but with this kind of trip you're not too worried about how you will look. The kitchen was up to par and we were able to prepare meals for 6 people in them. There was also a table large enough for all of us to sit and eat at. We did laundry on one of the larger islands when we absolutely had to, I think we did it once during the whole trip, youre mostly in your swimsuit.

Renting the catamaran to stay on was amazing for many reasons. First we got to make our own itinerary, we mapped out the first week of places that we felt were important to go to and to see and then leave the second weekend open for our own kind of island hopping. This allowed us to see many smaller islands that we would not have thought of going to. Second, we all worked together on the boat, you can sail if you like but we are not experienced so we motored a lot of the way. You do have a captain stay with you for the first two days and show you ho everything is done, which was very helpful. Third we did not feel rushed and on a schedule for anything, everything was what we wanted to do and how we wanted to do it. If we wanted to stop somewhere quickly and take a swim or a snorkel then we would just drop anchor and jump off the boat!

The Westin Resort: A Disappointment

Not up to par for a Westin. Think they just slapped this up quickly after the Hurricane. The front entrance had absolutely nothing inviting about it and the lobby was dreary with a casino stuck right in the lobby.

This is NOT a place to take small children if they want to go in the ocean. It's very windy so the surf is rough, with a very strong current. Adults couldn't even go any further out than to their waist.

Hotels etc.: A LITTLE ADVISE ON ACCOMMODATIONS IN THE BVI

Just a few notes that might be helpful for your planning:

Hotels on the BVI can be expensive if you don't know where to start looking. There are quite a few luxurious resorts, however, there are also many small affordable guesthouses, the "Jewels of the BVI". You can find a list here .

Please note that all big hotel chains are not represented on the BVI, no Hilton, no Marriot, no Holiday Inn etc. This means that no big hotel blocks destroy the views of the nature. Some of the resorts, including the biggest one on the island, you can hardly see from the sea! They are hidden behind palmtrees.

You can rent villas that reach from small huts on the beach with basic equipment to the most luxurious villas with your own private chef. Both have a special charme I guess!

We stayed in a private house without airconditioning. Mosquitoes and the heat kept us awake most nights. If you are a mosquito-magnet as I am you might want to consider staying in a room with A/C.

Government tax and a service charge will be added to all your hotel bills.

It's quite normal that you won't get room keys in the hotels of the BVI. We stayed in one of the best resorts on the islands and didn't get one. As there is nearly 100% safety on the islands locking doors isn't necessary.

Katitche Point Greathouse: PURE LUXURY!

During our two days on Virgin Gorda we had the chance to visit Katitche Point Greathouse, the most fantastic villa in the BVI. The German owner had invited us to show us around the villa and to have lunch on the fantastic verandah overlooking several small islands. We even got the chance to jump into their fantastic infinity pool. If I were rich I now know where I would stay for my next visit to the BVI. This place is magic.

You can rent Katitche Point Greathouse all for yourself or for up to 10 people. There are four suites, all with a lovely bathroom and a great view and verandah, and there is the "Master Bedroom", a fantastic suite with a gorgeous view from the bed, with a spa bathroom which includes coy carps and a lot of rubber duckies. You will spend a lot of time on the verandah and in the pool, but there also is the chance to go inside. The huge main house has a huge dining table, a professional kitchen, the obligatory BOSE sound system, a TV area and the crow's nest, the top floor where you can lie down under the stars. Everything is furnished and decorated in a very stylish and warm way.

Prices are high but worth it. A holiday spent here must be magic. Included in the rental rate is the maid service, the butler and concierge service. If you want to have a little extra luxury you can hire a private chef for the time you are there. I can recommend the chef, the lunch we had there was excellent!!!

Rosewood Little Dix Bay Resort: SLEEPING, ROCKEFELLER STYLE!

During our stay in the BVI we stayed in a private house on Tortola. However, we wanted to get to know at least one of the fantastic resorts on the islands so we booked ourselves on night in the Little Dix Bay Resort on Virgin Gorda. What a great decision. This place is magic!

Founded by Rockefeller in the 1960s this hotel brought tourism to the British Virgin Islands. The Queen spent some time here when she visited the BVI aboard the Britannica. So it's no surprise that Little Dix is rather expensive. Luckily we got a great deal, the normal price for our ocean cottage would have been approx. 850$ plus tax and service charge. If you aren't on a budget you should at least spend a night here though. It's worth every cent spent!

We were welcomed by a driver at the ferry with scented cool towels and ice cold water. He welcomed us with the words "Welcome to Paradise". At the reception we met another driver who brought us to our room in one of the golf cars that provide transportation in the large resort. He welcomed us with a friendly "Welcome Home". All staff member were incredibly friendly and make you feel like a queen yourself.

The resort is located at a half a mile crescent white beach. The sea is turquoise and calm and perfect for spending some lazy time in the water. I especially liked the floats that are available at the beach. You can just lie down on them and float along the water. Wonderful. You can also take your snorkelling gear (which you can rent for free at the watersports desk btw) and lie down on a float and snorkel the lazy way. Soooo relaxing!

Our Ocean Cottage was wonderful, too. It came with a modern bathroom with a fantastic powerful shower and bathtub, air conditioning which keeps the mosquitos away, a bottle of rum and three apples, the most comfortable bed I have ever stayed in and a location maybe 10 metres from the beach.

The resort is located in a huge garden which is as clean and organised as you can imagine. Seems like Little Dix employs the best gardeners on the islands! There is a fantastic hilltop spa with a panorama yoga plateau and a small but lovely infinity pool, there are more tennis courts than in Wimbledon, breakfasts are supposed to be fantastic (we chose to spend some time at the beach instead!) and you can book watersports activities, boat trips and picnics in the resort. There also is a free boat shuttle service to Devil's Bay/The Baths and free snorkelling gear rental.

Biras Creek Resort: Seclusion on Virgin Gorda

The first thing you notice about Biras Creek is that you need to arrive by boat. Whether you use their service or have sailed in on your own, you can only get there by boat. You are met at the dock and shuttled to the main building to check in. Check in was easy and was handled with a smile, something that is important to me.

We had a beachfront room with gorgeous views. The bathroom had an enclosed outdoor shower which was wonderful. Our room had a separate living area that was comfortable and casual. The bedroom had a king sized bed with wooden shutters on the large picture window.
The meals here were excellent! The bartender was great and overall the staff were just wonderful.

Biras Creek is a very quiet resort where you can only relax. There is no other option, relax and enjoy the lovely weather and scenery.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone prepared to splurge a little. You will get what you pay though, which makes up for the dent in your pocketbook.

This hotels unique quality is its feeling of remoteness. After you arrive by boat, you really feel like you have been transported to a far corner of a beautiful world and that your enjoyment will not be interuppted.

Long Bay Beach Resort: Tortola Hotel Recommendation

Stayed at Long Bay Beach Resort for our Honeymoon in April of 2005. The resort was great! The location on of the resort on the island is perfect because it is secluded enough to be very relaxing yet it is easy to get to other interesting spots on the island.

-I recommend staying in one of the beachfront cabanas. They are slightly rustic, but very comfortable and right on the beach.
-The beach itself is very nice and uncrowded. Swimming is best just west of the resort.
-The pool area is great and has a swim up bar/grill. The service here (especially Cheryl) is VERY good and friendly.
-The 2 restaurants in the resort were both very good. Tortola is full of fun restaurants so we ate at many places outside the resort. For this reason, we opted not to take the "all-Inclusive" option.

Fort Recovery Estate Villas: Great place for nighttime ocean breezes

There are about five different kinds of villas at Fort Recovery, and we were placed in the "Poolside" room. It was a huge room with a bookshelf divider, equipped with a full kitchen, a table and room for four. There was no glass in the windows, so we got ocean breezes all night long, and we were located right next to the freshwater pool.

I would recommend this hotel to almost anyone. There is a fair amount of road noise, or so my father tells me, but I'm a heavy sleeper so I didn't notice it. It is quite close to the road.

This resort is one of the few that are located at sea level and right on the ocean. You can walk through the immaculately kept courtyard, past the 400-year-old fort ruins, to the sand beach. You can watch many pelicans dive awkwardly into the water in search of fish, a spectacle that will keep you amused for hours.

Sebastien's on the Beach: Sebastien's, Apple Bay -good value, great location

The room was average but the hotel is in a great location - Apple Bay (with Long Bay on one side, which has a great beach and the Bomba Shack on the other, where the surfers go)

The food was great - recommend the pancakes (you can have them every morning - I'm craving them as I type!)

Also, make sure you get a bottle of Sebastien's rum - they serve you a complimentary taste of it after dinner.. very sweet - unlike any rum I've tasted. Non-rum drinkers - try it anyway! You'll love it!!!

All in all, though not a luxury hotel, it was the perfect place to relax and chill out by a bee-you-tee-full beach with nice people. They have rooms, suites, or apartment-style accomodations to fit all budgets. I would stay there again.

**Make sure you say hello to the dog - pay attention to when he's inside enjoying the air conditioner and get yourself a bottle of water!!! :)

They make their own rum.
BUY A BOTTLE!!!

They recycle other liquor bottles so don't be surprised if they hand you a tequila bottle full of the magical yummyness, with an old-colour-printed and hand cut label, of course!

They tape it up with crazy tape - in a manner that we had no trouble getting it back through customs when we returned home.
