 | Virgin Gorda The Wheelhouse (Ocean View Hotel) Virgin Gorda Reviews | 1 - 2 of 2 | |
Also known as "the Wheelhouse" (which is really the attached small local-style restaurant), this is the budget no-frills spot to stay in. It's right across from the main harbour & marina in Spanish Town, and within easy walking distance of half a dozen eating establishments. There are only garden views from the 12 rooms and the beach is a 15 minute walk away. Rooms are pleasant & clean, air conditioned, with cable TV & private baths and balconies upstairs.
If you've got means to get around easily (like a rental car) and you don't expect to spend much time in your room, this is a good choice for you. It's also a good transitional one-night stop, since you could walk to the ferry dock or marina with your luggage or diving gear for pick up. Let me preface this by saying I've stayed in my fair share of low end/cheap accomodations, but this place was a dump!!! I originally booked 3 nights here, because it was the cheapest accomodation I could find and it was really close to the ferry dock, but after one very miserable night I immediately upgraded to the amazing Guavaberry Vacation Homes. The hotel is a cinder block craphole with very uncomfortable and dirty twin beds, tiny rooms, and a 12 inch TV that supposedly has cable (4 channels). The owner was very unfriendly...she gossiped on a personal call for nearly 20 minutes, before checking me in and didn't seem to care about my patronage, which explains to me why I was the ONLY person staying there. Not to mention there is a bar only feet from the hotel that booms its music 24/7 making it very difficult to sleep and it was truly irritating. I didn't even bother checking out the shower and avoided the bathroom at all costs except to squat and pee....I felt like I was staying at a place they would rent by the hour...it was truly that gross, definitely not fitting for a Caribbean vacation! My advice to you would be to not even consider this place as an option for your trip, you can stay somewhere much nicer for a little bit more.
