 | | | | Eldemire's B&B Guest House: Reality check! | Satisfaction: | | | | |
If you choose to stay here, just know what you are getting into and you'll be fine. But go with high expectations and you'll be disappointed. Based on the earlier reviews, I was expecting something other than what I got. I knew the location was not near 7-mile beach but was optimistic about Smith Cove. But it is so small, it fits in 1 photo! At least, the ironshore and marine life that gets trapped in it is very cool. I also knew that the B&B was in a Cayman neighborhood and not a resort area but wow...I wasn't prepared for the bare minimum! I was expecting this B&B to be like a typical US B&B. It is not! The rooms were clean but was not warm and welcoming. We never even met Tootie until the end of our 2nd day. She IS very nice and we thought SHE was great, but we had unrealistic expectations of the accomodations. We did indeed get a free trip to Stingray City which was great. We did have to pay for a taxi there and back but the trip itself was free and one of the highlights of our stay. Now, breakfast! Substantial? HARDLY! I wasn't expecting a lot, just a few choices of homemade goodies. Instead, EVERY morning was the same thing;white or wheat thawed sliced bread next to a toaster with bowls of margarine and jam and a tiny apple. THAT's ALL! We got so tired of our piece of bread and apple to start the day that we hit a grocery store on our way to 7-mile beach to get a few different things. I guess what I am saying is...don't expect breakfast at this "bed and breakfast"! As for service, you get nothing you don't ask for. We were there 5 days and our room was never cleaned once or checked for any needs. We had to request more toilet paper and clean towels which they were glad to get for us but again, we had to ask. I hope I don't sound too harsh about this B&B. I am just trying to give a more realistic picture using my own experience. The people there are all very nice and we truely enjoyed them. We just wish we hadn't gone completely off of the prior reviews. There are actually two halves or sides to this hotel. The main part of the hotel is located inland and the beach side houses many suites and rooms facing the beach and poolside views. This is where our room was located. At first, we thought this was strange to be across the street from the main hotel but actually we got used to it. It wasn't a big deal and the change of scenery only added to the experience. We would go back and forth between sides using the covered overpass and use both pools. We actually preferred the pool on the main hotel side in the mornings and then the pool on the beach side in the afternoons. Don't ask why, just as crowds come in we move out..It also depended on our evening plans, water sports - they are all located on the beach side.. Try both and then you can choose your favorite. Our room, by the way, was very large and elegantly decorated. We had a balcony which we love and always use for evening chill time and early morning-room service breakfast. Food and service was always very good! I highly recommend this hotel. We were very satisfied. I would go back in a second. Cayman is expensive but a relaxing trip with tons of fun in the sun.
The coolest thing at this hotel is the swim up bars! Beachside has a smaller bar (and smaller pool) that faces the beach. The other pool has a larger bar. I was told it was in a movie with Gene Hackman and Tom Crusie, The Firm. The drinks were awesome..we had our favorites, no idea of the name.. Picked right from the drink menu. The bartenders were very friendly. Visit the Spa located at the Hyatt Regency; we had massages and couldn't complain. (Visit concierge to reserve your appointment asap). As always for spas, arrive early to detox and take your time cooling down before your treatment ie. massage, facial etc. Drink plenty of fluids right after. One negative thing: On the beach side there is one measly small store that sells horrid coffee and stone hard bagels and pastries. After the first day, we learned our lesson, we quickly found another breakfast place..see my restaurant tips. UPDATE: 9/25/04 Note: The Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman is closed until December 1, 2004 due to water damage sustained from the passing of Hurricane Ivan.
