ROYAL REEF: Reef Resort Was Great! Part 2 of 3
  • Satisfaction:
  • After trying pretty hard to think of even one negative thing about the resort we are left with just this. I wish the staff had been more forthcoming and personable. But really, I’m not buying a best friend so I’m not even sure this is a legitimate resort comment. So, assuming they will fix it so their customers can somehow connect to the internet either over a phone line or wireless, the Reef Resort is flawless. It is everything is promises to be and I recommend it. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about the island or resort.

ROYAL REEF: Reef Resort Was Great! Part 1 of 2
  • Satisfaction:
  • My husband and I returned from a week long stay at Grand Cayman Reef Resort four days ago on 12/3/2005. The information we gained from the net reading others comments and reviews of the island and it’s accommodations was so helpful to us that I decided to really do my best to return the favor for others looking for information about a recent trip to Grand Cayman and the Reef Resort by leaving a really through review of our stay. (Apparently also in the form of super long sentences) So…here it goes. Note: I am posting my comments regarding the island and the resort separately in there respective forums. Our Room: Our room was 104a. Lovely. So much nicer than we expected. Such a great view. In fact the appliances, full sized, were newer than the ones we have at home. The rooms were spotlessly clean and fresh smelling. They provided all of the amenities such as dish detergent, sponges to wipe up, utensils etc even the ice trays were full and ready when we arrived. The furnishings were new and nice if not upscale. Comfortable except for the bed which was so hard that we thought they had accidentally stacked two box springs. My guess is that the staff would have switched out the beds if we had said anything but we didn’t bother. The air conditioning worked like a dream. It really does feels like your own little apartment after a few days. In fact it was very similar in size and layout to my first apartment. Regarding housekeeping: The housecleaning staff empty trash cans and collect towels once a day and clean the whole suite twice a week. GREAT housekeeping!

ROYAL REEF: Reef Resort Was Great! Part 2 of 3
  • Satisfaction:
  • We had a problem with our TV that was not resolved but it was no big deal. The only real negative for us was the internet access. There was no access during the week we were at the resort and the staff seemed entirely unapologetic about this. By this I mean that when I called the front desk to ask about the error message I got when I tried to access their wireless the front desk woman said something along the lines of “yes, other guests have said they couldn’t connect. It must be down.” Period. No more information. We went to the internet café on site later in the week to ask when the wireless might be up again, and too offer my husbands help, he is a network person, and we got the same answer as before only this time they added that the network guy must be off the island because he didn’t answer his phone. It was a big deal to me. My cell phone didn’t work at all not even my voice mail and I was worried about a grandmother with a cold. No reason to think she wasn’t ok but you know how it is. In the end what we feel makes this resort stand out above the others is the housekeeping. I guess they are the people that really set the tone for the whole resort and they set a good one. Even the beach was spotlessly kept up. GO Housekeeping! (no I am not being paid by the housekeeping staff at the Reef Resort.) The Beach: The best sand on the island, the best off beach snorkeling of the beaches we visited though I wouldn’t recommend this island if you are especially interested in off beach snorkling. After a few days looking around at 7 Mile Beach and Rum Point we decided that while the beaches were prettier there they were not so much better that it made sense to travel 40 minutes to get there. We decided we were better off at the resort. With that said I will now add the only real negative thing I have to say about the resort.

Seven Mile Beach Rst And Club: Seven Mile Beach Club
  • Satisfaction:
  • We flew in on a Thursday from Dallas (DFW) on a chartered trip in May 2001. Hotel and Airfare for 3 nights cost about $400 a person. We stayed at the Seven Mile Beach Resort and Club. This resort also offers time shares. We were a very short walk from the Beach. We rented two condos for the trip. We had about 10 people total. Each condo was fully equiped with a kitchen, living room (with queen sleeper sofa), 2 bedrooms (one queen size bed and one with two twin beds). Two bathrooms. TV, VCR and cable. Screened in balcony area. Unfortunately, the resort sustained extensive damage from hurricane Ivan on Sept. 11, 2004. There are pictures that detail the reconstruction process on the resort's website.

All of the condos faced a courtyard area, which is where the pool and hot tub were located. We had great views of the beach.

    Sleep Inn: Not as expensive
  • Satisfaction:
  • I booked the Sleep Inn near 7 Mile beach for about 100$ a night, which is not bad for this island. I could easily walk to the beach or to town from here. It had a nice pool and hot tub as well. Sleep Inn is only a few minutes away from the airport, so you can get your vacation started quickly.

The hotel was accessed from the airport via public transportation bus. The rooms were decorated in a island style with bright colors. There were lots of wicker accessories in the room. The hotel was all-inclusive, so all meals were provided. The meals were quiet good, and were usually served buffet style. There was evening entertainment at dinner. There was also afternoon socials down by the beach. There was a dive shop on site, and for a fee dive sessions were available. You cold also rent jeeps to do your own sightseeing.

I really enjoyed the lobby of the hotel. It was constructed out of stone, and was very unique looking. Outside the front door of the lobby was available tours and sightseeing you could arrange through the resort, written on a dry erase board. There were beautiful views of the ocean, and since there was no other resort nearby, the beach was very quiet. The day we got there, we explored the beach and only saw two other people, and they were residents who lived in houses facing the beach. Also due to a government proctected reef near the resort there was no swimming there, which was a bummer.

    Sunset House: Gorgeous diving experience
  • Satisfaction:
  • I went there for the underwater photography course given by Cathy Church. These were two of the best weeks I ever spent! The Sunset Divers, the superb dive support yatchs, Cathy Church's U/W Photo Center and the associated logistics, the excelence and dedication of Cathy and her assistants , along with the beautiful grounds, complete this diver’s Caribbean paradise. Of course, I rented a scooter to get around and enjoy the rest of the island. From early in the morning, before breakfast, we would examine the previous days work (U/W negatives/slides) as to develop a shooting strategy for the current day. Several dives per day in different sites gave me the opportunity to practice and enjoy this great activity. At night, along the restaurants and bars on Seven Mile Beach, I could enjoy fine meals and a relaxed drink, or two!, by the sea.

Perhaps what was outstanding was the support given to a diver, whether beginner or expert.

Sunshine Suites By Wyndham: The best hotel in the Marriott's 'backyard'
  • Satisfaction:
  • My stay was very pleasant & relaxing. The rooms are spacious & some have kitchen facilities. Staff are friendly & helpful. Location is ideal. I highly recommend this hotel, the price is great for the location & it doesn't have the resort feel about it.

It has a great location, just across the road from the beach. Has a pool & great bar & restaurant on the premises. Frequented by the locals (expats).

Sunshine Suites By Wyndham: Good value and friendly staff
  • Satisfaction:
  • Rooms very comfortable, clean, and well equipped. All rooms are non-smoking. Reception staff welcoming and helpful. On the down side none of the rooms have private balconies or terraces, just communal walkways. Also there are no sea views. The bar/restaurant offers reasonably good meals although the quality and choice are not up to the standard of many of the restaurants in the area. Also the bar closes at 10 p.m. The weekly BBQs are worth checking out with a good choice of tasty dishes especially the baked fish. There's also a live local band. Some shops and restaurants are within walking distance, but generally you need to drive or take a taxi. On the whole a good place to stay in Grand Cayman without breaking the bank

Our room service maid, Miss Ethel, was wonderful and really looked after us well and made the stay special for us.
