east end weather and snorkeling
by Lindamd
We are loooking to stay on grand cayman in january. East end seems nice and remote ( we are not looking for night life etc) however the guide books mention a stong onshore breeze/wind. Does anyone know if this is a problem at this time of year? We would want to be able to sit on the beach etc. Is the snorkeling off the beach good? Does the breeze make the sea conditions too rough? Any other information gratefully recieved. Many thanks Linda

The East End is the windiest district on the island. In the winter (late December - late February) the 'Christmas Winds' from stalled fronts off the mainland and nor'westers blowing through can create windy conditions for consecutive days on both the East End and North Side. If bad, the wind can make sitting on the beach unpleasant and snorkeling near impossible due to choppiness and steady currents. Like hurricanes, it is a chance you take. If conditions are unpleasant, many folks will spend the day on Seven Mile Beach or over at Rum Point where it is usually much calmer. Anyone staying on the East End or North Side really needs to have rental car.
The snorkeling on the East End and North Side is some of the best on the island, as well as the Caribbean. Here is a link to a guide of the area:

Excellent Beaches, A class Scuba Diving
by maxine24
Scuba Diving is great there,. They have many sights for both beginers and advanced divers, from shallow to the Caman Brac Wall.
Stingray city is a must for all even snokellers.
They are friendly people and the weather is always great. The peace and quiet. It really is pure paradise.
Wander on your own

Use the local bus....It's convenient, relatively timely, and very cheap. Why pay $35-$50 (US) for a "3-hour all inclusive tour of the famous sites" of which you may only like one or two, when you can see the same sites in about the same amount of time (faster if you want) for about $5.00 or less using the local transport. Just check a map for where you want to go.
Christmas in the Caymans
by ScubaCat
For some reason Caymans go way out in there Christmas decorating. I stopped and got pictures of this house as it was on South Sound Road (a road much less traveled) than trying to stop on a busy street and risk getting run over. This particular home had music playing, Santa was actually singing & dancing and the figurines on the front porch moved and sang as well. I'm just amazed at how much work these people put into decorating their homes at Christmas. It must have taken a month to get all this stuff up. And it was just not this house but all over the island houses were decorated just as elaborately.
Do not take too much

Light and they check them by hand at the airport when you leave so get there in plenty of time!! Casual What you don't take you can get there......for a price................... Cooler. The bar drinkd are expensive. Always go to the liquor store and make our own for the beach................
