Beach at North Point Grand Cayman. Swimming is good ? Plage à North Point. Nager c'est bien ?

by mei008

We plan to rent a condo at North point on April-May, but we have concerns about the beach and the water. Is the beach is littered of dead corals and seaweed ? The entrance to the water is littered of dead corals ? which means, we have to wear beach shoes ? is swimming is good ? lots of seaweed into the water ? The condo is located about 5 minutes (by car) south of Rum point.

Every information you know about North Point, Cayman Cai, for the beaches, the water, snorkeling is appreciated. Thanks.

hi mei,
you're in luck! I just got a guidebook for the Caribbean Islands as I'm going to Turks and Caicos.

Here's what it says about Grand Cayman:

Nothing is called North Point exactly, but all points on the island are described separately and one entry is titled "North Side". Its highlight is said to be "beautiful Rum Point", so I guess that's your North Point.

Rum Point main activities are swinging in hammocks and snorkeling. Ferry from Seven Mile Beach no longer runs so it's a quiet spot. BUt travelers drive here from all over the island for a day on the beach.

Retreat at Rum Point condo has a fantastic beach. Wreck Bar is the friendliest you can find.

----- That's it. Beaches there sound nice from that guidebook. But I read all entries and there's not a word about swimming, it's all about snorkeling. Just so you know.
Franchement, je doute que les visiteurs se rendraient à Rum Point en si grand nombre si la plage, ou les plages, étaient parsemées de coraux et d'algues. :)
Bon voyage!

With the exception of the beach at Rum Point proper, the beach areas of the North Side do have some washed up corals and iron shore (very hard rock) at the water entrance in some areas. The sea bottom has a few areas of sand, but in many areas it is a bed of short turtle grass. The area is fine for swimming and fantastic for snorkeling, but the water is not at conducive for playing in as it would be at Rum point or Seven mile Beach.

Travel Tips for Grand Cayman

What better way to escape the winter

by bianchis

Of course the climate - where the temperature, summer or winter, seldom goes lower than 70 deg. F. or higher than 90 deg. F.

A getaway in winter where the average temperature is 78 deg. F. in the winter and about 84 deg. F in the summer.

Between May and October the prevailing winds are from east to south; from November to April, the coolest season of the year, prevailing winds are from the northeast to northwest. I try not to go in the hurricane season which typically lasts from June to November. My friends from 20 to 30 years ago who still live on the island and with whom I have shared wonderful memories.

Looking for some cheap snacks & drinks

by AliasGirl

Head to a local Foster's Food Fair Supermarket! You can find one on West Bay Road near Hyatt Regency Hotel. We stopped in and picked up plenty of snacks for the beach/pool and to keep in the room. We also grabbed a bunch of iced tea 6 packs and water bottles, they came in handly so we didn't have to hit the ridiculously expensive mini-bar!

Snorkeling is great too

by catalysta

For those of you who are non-divers, don't think there is less for you to do on Grand Cayman. There are so many wonderful and easily accessible snorkeling sites around too! One of the best was right outside our door at the Turtle Nest Inn. Another was Spanish Reef, where my mom snorkeled while I went on a little shore dive. And then there are the 2 lovely resorts past East End, both of which have great snorkeling and swimming beaches, Morritt's Tortuga Club & the Reef Resort.

Visit George Town

by AliasGirl

To get a feel for real locals and how they live day to day, leave your cushy resort and head to George Town. You'll find friendly folks and children that love to tease and smile..

We spent some time walking around in the town, stopping in little shops to support local artists, visiting the straw market, taking in the daily life of a local and trying Cayman cuisine.

There are many ins and outs to the town, go walking all around and you may be surprised to find a small cafe full of locals enjoying local chit chat and reading the paper. You may also find an artist displaying his/her wooden figurines, flutes, wind pipes, etc. The women have small crocheted dolls and straw purses that are very cute as well.

Mosquito Repellent

Don't forget to pack the Off along with plenty of sunscreen. We packed our portable CD player with small portable speakers, placed them in a ziploc bag (to keep them dry) and took them to the beach with us.
