Gorgeous diving experience

I went there for the underwater photography course given by Cathy Church. These were two of the best weeks I ever spent! The Sunset Divers, the superb dive support yatchs, Cathy Church's U/W Photo Center and the associated logistics, the excelence and dedication of Cathy and her assistants , along with the beautiful grounds, complete this diver’s Caribbean paradise. Of course, I rented a scooter to get around and enjoy the rest of the island.
From early in the morning, before breakfast, we would examine the previous days work (U/W negatives/slides) as to develop a shooting strategy for the current day. Several dives per day in different sites gave me the opportunity to practice and enjoy this great activity.
At night, along the restaurants and bars on Seven Mile Beach, I could enjoy fine meals and a relaxed drink, or two!, by the sea.

Unique Quality: Perhaps what was outstanding was the support given to a diver, whether beginner or expert.

Shore Diving At The Sunset House

The shore diving here was nicer too!
And it was easy to just snorkel as well, with all sorts of interesting fish right there by the steps. In fact, it was here that I swam right into a school of Caribbean Reefs Squids, at least a dozen of them, who posed for me quite nicely (see additional photos with this tip).

Just as an aside, did you know that many fish, groupers & parrotfishes included, switch genders in different phases of their lives? Most start out as females, then become males in the final phase of their lives. What fun, too bad we don't do that too, presto - no more gender inequality issues! Reminds me of an old Ursula LeGuinn book, what was the title of that one...

But if it's a DIVERS hotel & package you want...

This hotel is practically next door to the Seaview, just a little ways further south from Georgetown. It's the next step up, just a little nicer. Advertised as created "by divers, for divers", it offers good values in its packages, with a good dive shop onsite as well. One of the big draws is that reknowned underwater photographer Cathy Church has her gallery & dive school here.

Although the rooms don't have a lot of extras either, they are just nicer, and roomier than the Seaview. But who needs Sat TV when you are staying at THE shore diving hot spot? BTW, the managers let me have a look and take a few photos when I told them I was going to put them on my Virtual Tourist web page!

Unique Quality: I did the Stingray City dive with the outfit here at the Sunset House. It was a great dive boat, nicely outfitted, and the equipment was all very good.

My only caveat, as a rank beginner in the Dive World, would be to warn other beginners that there's a bit of the dive snobbery in the hotels that cater specifically to divers, and you'd better know how to handle your own gear, that's what's expected of you.

I was a little confused at times, & the guys in the shop could've been a lot more helpful in their explanations of where/when/what to do. (Monosyllabic answers just don't cut it when you are a newbie.)

More about Sunset House

Simple, friendly dive resort

by Jester632 about Sunset House

I have stayed at the Sunset House every time I visit the island. The hotel is simple, well maintained, clean and the staff is friendly. If you are looking to stay at a luxury resort on a white sand beach, this isn't the place for you. There is no beach here, but the shore diving is excellent. Sunset house is within walking distance to downtown George Town. There is a great bar at the hotel called My Bar. It’s a great place to hang out after a day of diving, meet people from all over the world and watch the sunset. The hotel also has its own dive shop with a fleet of well equipped dive boats. They offer a dive inclusive package that gives you a small discount.

Sunset House Dive Facilities

"Sunset House Entry/Exit"

Here is the entry/exit area, with 2 ladders. I prefer a giant-stride entry here. The water is about 15 feet deep at the entry. You can go as deep as you want here. The wall drops off into the thousands of feet.

"Unfortunate sight"

Well, the view from Sunset House to the south is not the prettiest. But you go to see the sights underwater anyway.

"Seaharvest Rstaurant"

The Sunset House Resort includes this seafood restaurant, just next to the dock & pool.

"Sunset Dive Shop"

Here's a view of the Sunset Divers Shop.

"Sunset House"

A view from the sidewalk.

Tours in Grand Cayman

by R.E.M.

My husband and I are going to the Cayman Islands in May..... We would like to know about some tours we can go on and the cost...
Thank You...

Re: Tours in Grand Cayman

by YVRDave

There is not much to see.
If you dive there is alot that you can book there ie. Stingray City.
But for tours there is Little Cayman and Cayman Brac
the outer islands that cater mainly to divers.

Stingray City is great, no diving but snorkelling with the stingrays, I have a page on it if youd like to take a look. It cost us about $20 and was worth every penny and more, best thing we ever did

you can also go out to sea in a mini submarine and see the reefs [ great if you dont dive ] but Im not sure how much it is

Shore dives are a really big thing on Grand Cayman, and of course you can snorkel a lot in the same areas. Many divers love the Sunset House or the Seaview Hotel for shore dives. Link for pics & info on my Grand Cayman page: http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/683d0/1a0aa9/3/

Stingray City trips are also offered from the Sunset House, the outfit I used, and snorkelers can go on the same boat as the divers. We were in about 15 feet of crystal clear water, putting on a show for the snorkelers, it was great fun. Will be posting those pics soon, just recently got them scanned.

For something different, I enjoyed the Butterfly Farm very much, but would recommend you go early in the morning to see the most activity: http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/683d0/1a0aa9/4/

The Caymans are a little spendy, generally they have a 20% markup on the US dollar. But I felt they were very worth it, clean, beautiful & relatively safe. Just enter 'Stingray City' in your search engine, and you'll get all the info you need for bookings. Shouldn't be difficult getting last minute reservations in May, not the height of tourist season.

Also check out theinfo on the Turtle Nest Inn's page, there are some good recommendations: www.turtlenestinn.com
