Natures Beaches Aparthotel by frank_delargy Well, The location is terrific, the rooms are a bit funky and the road to get to it requires a 4WD. If you want the closest rental place to the Manuel Antonio NP , this would be a good choice. I did see hotels that seemed to be closer to the park, but none of them were right in the beach like this is. We were there in the 'wet' season, which means it rains at night and with a tin roof, no windows (screens and bars) you can imagine the din it was with the rain pounding on the tin roof, the loud jungle sounds and the roar of the surf. Let's just say that the night I slept in downtown Manhattan, above the fire station, was quieter than this.. but these were all nature's noises. We rented the Penthouse, which was big enough for 5 of us. If you want air conditioning & glass windows, this is not for you..
Funky.. Very talkative hostess.. Wildlife can be fantastic. The view of nature is the best at any place I have ever stayed.. and I have stayed at a lot of great places. Selva Verde Resort by frank_delargy This is a rather well know eco-tourist hotel east of San Jose and south of Arenal. It has plenty of wildlife on the grounds and I believe that they provide lots of tours, though we were not there long enough to take advantage of them. They have great Golden Orb spider, Poison dart frogs, Jesus Christ lizards (walk on water), hummingbirds, orependula and tons of other creatures too! We did see a sloth here. Check out the gardens across the street. (Picture provided by Selva Verde)
It blends well into the environment for a hotel.. They have decent food and cater to American / European food options while still providing local dishes. There is a great bridge over the river that runs by the hotel. Walk across the bridge toward some conservation land with jungle trails with monkeys, etc.

view from porch by frank_delargy We rented a house for 4 days in Arenal at Por Dicha. http://www.a1vacations.com/kell/1/ There were 5 of us , so per person costs were pretty low. You do need a 4WD to get to it as the side road into it is not paved and not even graded in places.
The Por Dicha house was lovely. Beautiful grounds ( the owners were gardeners) and a fantastic view of Lake Arenal. Howler Monkeys, Humming birds, Toucans, and many other creatures in the back yard.

Rancho by kyoub We had a very large bedroom with bath on the second floor of the main house. There was a balcony clear across that was great for viewing the birds early every morning. They also left the bug light on every night to see what interesting bugs might show up. We went on nature trail hikes every day and saw beautiful birds. This was our first birding trip and it certainly made birders out of us very quickly.
Great views . A stay of a week or more can be split between Rancho Naturalista and the Tarcol Lodge. Transportation to and from the airport in San Jose is provided.

By the pool of San Bosco, under Arenal Volcano by BEETLE_VERTE Fortuna / Arenal We had reservation for a cabin outside (800m) of Fortuna with another hotel, but headed back when we discovered that the city ends up pretty quickly and there's nothing there but dirt roads to reach the promised cabina. We travel by bus and taxi, so we wouldn't enjoy the city as much if we stayed that far, althought we later saw very nice and even more luxurious hotels and cabins on the road. If you have a car, it could very well be worth it. On our back to the city, we choose to stay at the San Bosco. Our stay at San Bosco was amazing and even more since we discovered it almost by accident, freneticaly trying to find a bed for the night with our backpack on our shoulders. The price was suprinsigly low for all we've got: big clean room, dresser and huge shelves (a must when backpacking!), very nice and clean bathroom, remote controlled A/C! 35$ a night
Nice landscape and balcony where we watched for hummingbirds. All you can drink amazing costarican cofee, pool, hammock and my all-time favorite: jaccuzis! All that under the Arenal volcano. Just a street away from the main attractions in the city, but very calm. Aside from the Estrellamar hotel in Jaco, this is our best stay. And one of our fondest memory.

Hotel by kyoub This hotel is in Puntarenas. We didn't arrive there in time to catch the ferry so we had to spend the night. The grounds were lovely with tropical flowers and trees. I remember I was walking down to dinner, heard a swoosh, looked up and there was a barn owl sitting in a tree.
The restaurant sat beside the bay. Great views and good food.

Cottage by kyoub We had a nice little cottage with single beds and the cutest fireplace. It came in handy because the nights got cool. I sat at the writing desk and looked out the windows at all the beautiful flowers outside, There was a nice large bathroom with a tub and hot water.
Great walking trails. Friendly guides. Many hummingbirds, I especially marveled at the large violet saberwings.

Room by kyoub This is a nice little place just 5 minutes from the airport. If you arrive late at night or want to be close for an early departure, this is a good place to stay. The rooms are in a motel like building but very neat and clean.
The owner is very friendly and will make you feel welcome. There is a nice small pool. The food is good also.

Rainforest cottage by kyoub Our cottage had a large bedroom, private hot shower that had a lot of glass, we could see out but no one could see in.There was a front porch area for relaxed nature viewing. If you are interested in birding then you have come to the right place.
