Travel Tips for Fortuna

Plop-plop, fizz-fizz

by Tom_In_Madison

With a weak stomach constitution, you may get a upset stomach/Montezuma's revenge/something. I know you're not supposed to because the water is good, but ....believe me--you will. So bring along a handful of tums, or some alka-seltzer, or something. You can always buy it there too like I did.

Free Arenal Hot Springs, Tabacon

by ABankerMU

Just west of the Tabacon resort near Volcan Arenal along Hwy 142, there is a small bridge, under which runs a small stream. If you want to experience hot springs without doing the Resort/Spa for $25, park your car in the spa parking lot and head down to the bridge. At the bridge, carefully climb down on the North side of the street. When down, start hiking south (crossing under the bridge). It may seem strange, but if you keep going, you'll find plenty of places to relax in the hot spring water amongst the peace and quiet of the forest. It was great. I hate resorts, and love to get off the beaten track. This is the best of both worlds. Check out the picture attached.

White Water Rafting

by Snipernurse

White water rafting is another must while in La Fortuna, again it is best to wait til you get to La Fortuna to book this adventure because there is lots of competition and oppurtinity to save money. We went rafting down Rio Toro and it was a blast! They first drive you by the Iguana Tree (you'll see what I mean when you go) and then it's launch time. It can get rough, theres tons of sharp rocks so bring your water sandals. The water is nice and the guides are lots of fun. They treat you to a home cooked lunch riverside and to some fresh fruits! We went with Desafio and they were awesome, highly recommend. Bring: Sunscreen, waterproof camera (safety guy in kayak with you takes great pics) and water socks

Tabacon Resort

by BEETLE_VERTE

Don't miss this! An unforgetable experience mixing tropical garden, luxury, volcano and hot springs...

After an Arenal volcano trip, they'll usually drop you here, but you can also come on your own just for this. It cost 29$ per person (19$ after 7pm... so we waited half an hour in the parking lot!). Deposit for locker key and towel.

Two rivers, heated by the volcano at 30C and 40C, are cascading in little ponds surrounded by luxurious vegetation. At
the bottom, they converge into a huge pool with a wet bar, animation and music. On a terrace above, the fancy restaurant. The rivers go so high and wander so much we get lost! The 30C river is very nice and we enjoy ourselves in this hot and paradisiac surrounding. Some ponds are calm, other have waterfalls, high water, low water, ... we don't have enough time to try them all!

At one point, we reach a heavy waterfall and we can seat under it. If we pass on the other side, it's like being in a sauna. I can't resist going back to the locker room and take my camera!

Any way, there's no word to explain how wonderfull this was. I never saw or even imagined something like that. Sitting at the foothill of a volcano, completely surrounded by palm trees, bromelias, flowers and other exotic plants, in pure water heated by a volcano. It's magic!

Horseback riding on a mountaintop

by twoinluv

We did a 3 hour horseback ride on a mountain, through the jungle, and right past the active volcano. It was fantastic. This was not your typical horseback ride where all the horses are old, following each other on a well-worn trail. This was free riding, galloping, going wherever looked interesting. And it only cost $20 per person. It is on the property of Hotel Los Lagos www.hotelloslagos.com
