Luxury outside of La Fortuna by 1/2 mile
The Arenal Country Inn is located about 1/2 mile outside of La Fortuna. The trip is a 3 minute cab ride, or a 10-15 minute walk down a road without a sidewalk. It is relatively safe, as Costa Rica drivers know to look on the side of the road for people and free-range animals. At night, take a flashlight, because the roads outside town are not lit.
This "Hotel" had a luxurious, B&B feel to it. The service was very good, and I'd recommend it to those who don't want to be in town...a little privacy is sometimes a good thing.
Unique Quality: I had booked the Arenal Country Inn for my first 2 nights using a Costa Rica Travel Agent I found on the Internet. It was very luxurious compared to most places. It had a pool, a restaurant with a free breakfast cooked to order, well-manicured grounds, a great view of the volcano, and duplex bungalow's with air conditioning, TVs, and private bath.
The volcano is clearly visible fromthe grounds...but it is anywhere you are outside in La Fortuna.
It was $110.00 per night, but you can get them down to $75.00 if you pay cash and drive a hard bargain. I say it was luxury, but there were a few minor problems: the sink leaked, you had to pay for local phone calls, and on the last day I saw a roach. But since roaches are practically family pets in Costa Rica, it's not that big of a deal.
