Great dinner at Arenal Volcano Inn

by TripAdvisor Member anonymoussfh

After a $69 lunch at the Tabacon Hot Springs consisting of 2 overcooked hamburgers, sodas, a salad, and dessert, we were searching out a good dinner close to La Fortuna. Thanks to Google search of 'good pizza La Fortuna' we found the recommendation above. Arenal Volcano Inn was outstanding. The pizza was great, Ceasar salad was good, and the dessert was outstanding. We did see the dessert recommended served to another guest but we had the warm chocolate dessert with ice cream and it was outstanding as well. And all for less than $40!!! We watched the man we assumed was the owner help some vegetarians pick out the appropriate entrees giving them samples of some of the local drinks to help them with their choice. What a great experience. My wife and I would highly recommend it. The only drawback is that tonight is our last night and so we won't be able to go back.

The best (only?) hotel in town

by Srechko about San Bosco

We drove from Grecia where we stayed the night before, and arrived to Fortuna in the early afternoon. I heard of this hotel before so we went right here. It was the best choice.

There is plenty of "Cabinas" in La Fortuna where you can find a room with shared bathroom for $7-$10. Unbelievably friendly and helpful receptionist, nice terrace with a view at Arenal volcano (even though it was mostly in clouds), comfortable and clean room, pool and 2 jacuzzis.

This is the only real hotel in Fortuna and it is the most expensive place to stay. We paid $50 for 3 persons which still didn't seem much especially comparing it to Grecia ugly hotel where they charged us $55.

Worst "Hotel" Ever

by PolyAna about Villas Vista Arenal

My stay at Villas Vista Arenal was supposed to be 3 fun days July 22-25th. We paid $80/night for the "deluxe villa" which had an in-room jacuzzi and a clear view of the Arenal Volcano. here's my story:

Day1: The exterior of the villa and the hotel grounds were fantastic looking. The villas all face Arenal Volcano and you can wake up with a clear shot of the cone form your bed! The first day is when our neighbors (room20) got ROBBED while having breakfast on the premises. Someone slid up the siding of the villa and crawled in through the opening. They got robbed of all their IDs, passports, credit cards and electronics. Since they were at the hotel restaurant, they didn't think to bring their belongings with them for breakfast. That day, when we returned from dinner, we found our room submerged in 2 INCHES of WATER from the T-storm that rolled through. Anything that was on the floor got soaked.

Day2: we went out the whole day and when we got back to the hotel we found that the POWER WAS OUT. the only hotel in all of La Fortuna that didn't have power was the Villas Vistas. Luckily, we had flashlights. when we got back to the room, the room was flooded and there was the HUGEST COCKROACH ever romping all over our stuff. That's the night we checked out and got our money back for our stay.

I would NOT recommend staying at this place unless you like water, the dark and cockroaches. The grounds are really pretty. there are a ton of exotic flowers and also easy access from the road. The unfortunate this is that the back of the villas are facing the jungle, thus the safety factor is non-existent.

The view of the volcano in the morning is great.

Great location at Arenal Volcano

by Lurchizo about Arenal Observatory Lodge

This is a great spot to spend a few days while in the La Fortuna area. It is about a half-hour drive from the town and has a pool and hot tub. Guided nature tours and all kinds of birds and animals hang out around the back deck. The restaurant has decent food and they didn't even mind us bringing in our own wine and beer. The staff are all very helpful and speak very good english. A bit of a drive out of town but well worth it. Many attractions and things to do nearby. The back deck faces the side of Arenal Volcano that is active. At night you may see lava boulders the size of a small house roll down the volcano and provide quite a light show!

Lovely place near Arenal Volcano

by 807Wheaton about Arenal Springs Resort

After driving through narrow hair pin roads from Torguguero we arrived at lovely Aranel Springs Resort. We had to walk a short way to our room for our stay. Actually each unit had two separate rooms. The bathroom is really unique with open ceiling for sunlight and rain in the shower area. Stones from the Arenal area is used for the walls and plants are growing in the top.
The bedroom had beautiful beamed ceilings and picture window sliding glass doors to see the volcano from our beds!!!
Voltive candles in the bathroom and shower area and nice thick towels. No lotion here, only shampoo and conditioner. The beds were hard and the pillows were flat. Arenal Springs Resort is like a huge garden with little cabins sprinkled around in cul de sacs.
There were banana plants growing outside our room, red caned palms and bird of paradise to name only a few things. The pool here is actually a huge hot tub with a swim up bar and stools. It was so soothing after a day of travel. Room for everybody with lots of space to spare. It was especially beautiful at night. We could see it from the dining room.
The dining room had open air dining - and it looked over the property.
We went to a salad bar buffet that was served to us. Then we had pumpkin soup. Entree was fish with tartar sauce, beef with mushrooms and gravy, baby potatoes, steamed veggies, spinach in cream sauce over noodles, great tortilla chips that were fresh, light and warm served beans and rice!!! Again fresh pineapple and watermelon, rolls and butter. Dessert was banana splits. Fresh bananas from Costa Rica. Yum, and of course, delicious coffee.

away from it all

by forshy1 about linda vista hotel

clean spacious rooms equipped with a small fridge, 2 full(?) size beds, and a coffee maker. the shower had excellent water pressue and there was also a blow dryer in the bathroom. i think we opted to stay in what was called a junior suite which provided us with a view of arenal volcano and arenal lake. i really enjoyed its isolated location but if you wanted to drive into the closest city, la fortuna, it could be a bit of a hassle especially at nite becuase the roads leading up to the hotel are unpaved and bumby. it's a doable drive, we did it. one wall of our room was a gigantic glass sliding door which faced our view of arenal lake and arenal volcano. outside was a bench where we sat, admired the view and relaxed. i hoped for a screen sliding door (in addition to the glass) but in retrospect, i don't think they have that because too many bugs would end up in the room. at night, there is a balcony light that turns on and attacts loads of insects. one thing to note is that bugs will sneak into your room no matter how quick you are. once that door opens, in they come. isolated location but their biggest draw was their pool. it is a mosaic overflow pool and the had a perfect temperature at morning, noon or night. it also has a pool bar. breakfast was included with our stay and the staff was extremely friendly. they do have a couple hiking trails nearby but we didn't check them out. you can get a room with or without a view of arenal..... either way though, the hotel has a viewing platform near the pool area where you can check out the view at any time. and, they are 4km from the arenal volcano national park.

In the middle of nowhere... Arenal Area

by GinGinCoo about Cerro Chato Eco Lodge

Before getting here I thought it was a great deal for the price ($35.00 for the most expensive room) they said it had a view of Arenal Volcano. Well when I got to Arenal, I realized almost every hotel/hostel/B&B in the area had a view of the Volcano, just depends on which side of the Volcano, the more expensive rooms had a view of the lava flow.

The place isnt bad but its too far from the main street in La Fortuna, so you have to get a cab to go anywhere or you're at the mercy of the owner, now thats a different story because he would drop us off to the hot springs but didnt say that it cost an arm and a leg to use him. It would've been cheaper to get a taxi.

Breakfast was good but if I would do it over again I would stay somewhere else.

Fantastic Hot Springs Lodge

by MoonRakerSCM about Tabacon Hot Springs Resort & Spa

We stayed 3 nights here as we toured the Arenal Volcano, went river rafting, and trekked through the surrounding jungle. The hotel was very nice to come back to after the rough days. There can be much wildlife right at the lodge as when we were there some monkeys decided to hang in the trees outside our room and the toucans hopped along in the trees at the restraunt. I highly recommend this hotel as a base for this area of your trip. The Views of the Volcano can be amazing weather permitting. The facilities are great and everything you would expect of a resort like this. The hot springs are amazing and one can spend alot of time just sitting in them for hours upon hours.

Stop right next to Arenal Volcano

by Srechko

"Neat town"

Fortuna is a small and clean town where everyone with plans on seeing volcano and doing other activites makes a stop. On the streets you can mostly see tourists and there is several restaurants and souvenir shops in the town.

We were here on our second day in Costa Rica.

Driving from Monteverde to Arenal Volcano

by Zyggy

What's the best way to drive (via 4X4) from Monteverde to Arneal Volcano? Can I drive around Lake Arneal or should I backtrack to Route 1 then up to La Fortuna ?? I'll be there Aug 9.

RE: Driving from Monteverde to Arenal Volcano

by sean420

You will want to take the bad road to Tilaran and then around the north side of Lake Arenal to La Fortuna. Once you pass Tilaran the road is mostly well paved. Should take about 3.5 hours

Thanx... It doesn't look that long on the map, but they tell me the roads are bad with many potholes... so I guess I will have to be patient and remember that I'm not in California going 80 mph.

RE: RE: Driving from Monteverde to Arenal Volcano

You will never be able to go that fast in Costa Rica. Be careful of your speed as on the main highways there are lots of police with radar. Never drive above the speed limit and allways wear your seatbelt or you might have to pay a hefty fine or make a "donation"

The road around the lake is not too bad.Take your time and have fun

Just been myself. Was told by all the tourist shops in Monteverde to go back to the Pan American and up to La Fortuna. Weather was awful so took about 5 and half hours.

Met a couple who had done the Monteverde Jeep/Boat/Jeep to Arenal. Took them just under 4.

If you can bear the bone shaking road, maybe the direct route is slightly faster, but the paved way is better in my opinion

RE: RE: Driving from Monteverde to Arenal Volcano

The road around the lake is paved-it's got some potholes but it's paved.Took us a lot less time .Pavement ends in Tilaron? There are some local roads that are steep and windy and unpaved that will get you from Monteverde to the pan am or la fortuna in less actual miles but you'd have to be brave and/or do it in the dry season and it'll be slow.
Oh ...just looked at the date on the question...they're there right now ----hope you had a good time-Chris
