Travel Tips for Fortuna

The Great Arenal

by SumTingWong

The Arenal National Park is the best way to explore Arenal and the Arenal environment. You can really spend hours walking around the trails. There is a lot to do. It is not very crowded, and the park is very large. It is rare to see huge groups of tourists, but you will have freedom and space to explore things at your own pace. I saw several people with binoculars: bird watching and looking at the volcano. There is a jungle area as well as some tranquil areas for just sitting by the lake. If you just sit and listen you can hear the rumbling from the volcano. It is a really nice place, and great for nature lovers, people who like history and the outdoors. It's an all around great trip! Sitting by the lake, with the volcano behind my, just listening to the rumbling of the volcano and looking at the birds fly by. At night make sure to look up at the rim of the volcano to see the bright red lava! You can still see the lava during the day, but not so vividly. During the day the lava doesn't appear red, but rather grayish and looks like smoke falling down the side of the volcano.

Arenal Hot Springs

by SumTingWong

The Arenal hotsprings are natural hotsprings from the Arenal Volcano, but the pl;ace has been turned into a tourist hang out. It is not really a tourist trap, because you don't go to really see anything, but rather just relax, have a drink, and go swimming in the warm water. There are some natural areas, with evry hot water, that you can go in, but there are also several pools where the natural water was filtered and is slightly cooler (about 32 degrees as opposed to about 42 degrees). There is a pool bar and a water slide. There is also an excellent buffet restaurant. You also can see the red lava comming out of the rim of the volcano at night. It is just a place to relax, not a place to admire, just keep that in mind, if not you will see it as a tourist trap.

Note that the enterence fee is a bit steep, US$20.00.

Reserva El Silencio

by Pieter11

At the southside of the Arenal Volcano you'll find the natural reserve "El Silencio", or The Silence. This area is the best place to see rainforest and wildlife in the area of La Fortuna. The park is devided in two parts. One part excists of green hills with only grass and trees, that go all the way to the bottom of the volcano. This is the part that was covered with lava and ashes during the big eruption of the Arenal in 1968. Today only lower trees grow here: the area clearly is still recovering for the disaster.

The other part of the part is completely different. Why it is called "El Silencio" here is ununderstandable, because in this lively rainforest you'll find all kinds of birds (even tucans) and several monkey-species in between the fascinating nature. Together these animals make a great, tropical noise. A walk through this part is really an adventure. All the time you have to look around and above you, because all the time you have the chance of spotting another monkey or bird. And even if you don't see any animals, the nature makes every step worth the effort: tall trees, colourfull flowers, wild streams: the forest here is very diverse.

I visited the park as a part of an organised tour. I believe the entrance is at least not more expensive then 5 dollars, and to get there you'd better charter a taxi from La Fortuna.

La Fortuna Waterfalls

by mim95

The waterfall is quite picturistic, plunging 75m from the top. Buy a ticket from the kiosk by the parking lot, which is a short walk to the fall entrance. There is a lookout of the falls nearby. Washroom and drinks are available.

You can walk to the base of the falls, which is about 500 steps down! Some parts of the trail are steep and narrow. But it has railings. And you pass by a lush rainforest the whole way, with a peek of the falls along.

Many ppl like to swim downstream but it's not recommanded, especially when it's raining.

Tour companies offer tours by horse or by van to the falls entrance. It's possible to walk or bike there on your own, but it's long and uphill. A taxi ride is 2000 colones one way.

See The Animals

by easterntrekker

WE enjoyed watching the animals in the Arenal area. The coatis were quite tam and as we were driving through the area they gathered near the van we were in when the driver spilled some Cola.

They look like racoons except they have narrower tails and heads.
