While driving to Arenal from San Jose, you might need a little break. Stop off, and visit the small community of Zacero. The beautiful church is surrounded by hand trimmed hedges of arches, animals and other odd shapes.
A great spot next to La Fortuna is the waterfall. You can either walk there like I did (approx. 1 1/2 hour or 7 km in hot, humid air) or reach it with horses, ATVs, bike or simply by car.
If you are in good constitution take the walk as the fresh swim at the foot of the waterfall will compensate for everything. The entrance fee is 3$.
From La Fortuna follow the road to San Ramon. After about 1 km there is a sign. Maybe there is another, nicer way if you are heading from La Fortuna direction Arenal Volcano and then turning left - but I haven't done this way so you should ask fist in town.
The best view of Arenal is at dawn , when there are no clouds . It's fogged in much of the time but the best chance is dry season and early morning.
There's a moment before it gets quite light that you can see the fire balls and the smoke coming from the top is pink in the sunrise ...its quite unbelievable.
The La Fortuna waterfall is just 2 kilometers outside of town. It is an strenuous hike down steep steps that are damp from the dew in the rainforest. But it is worth it. A breathtaking view. Take your shoes off and walk in the cool water. Be careful, tourist have swam here and been caught under the tremendous force of the falls and drowned. But just walking along the banks is relaxing and refreshing.
