If you have had several other naturalist tours on your trip and maybe you just want to spend a few hours hiking on your own, you can take a taxi to the Parque Nacional del Volcan Arenal, hike the 4 km trail, and have the taxi pick you up on the other end of the trail. Our driver suggested this, and we thought it was fun. If you begin at the far end of the trail, you must first wade through or hop on rocks across a small stream. From that side of the trail, the first half of the journey is very jungly. Then you come out on the lava flows which have yellow stakes to guide you through and stay on the path. There is a great view of the volcano from there. The last part of the trail is just low grasses and easy walking. The phone number below is for Taxi Viejito. The guy is very nice and has a powerful 4 x 4 that can carry up to 7 people. He can take you other places too. He speaks only Spanish though so hopefully you know at least a little bit. Cost for this trip is $30 total.
There are more volcano tours tha you can shake a stick at here. This is why you come here though. I chose one that did a hike to near the base of the volcano, then took us after to a thermal bath. $25. Very nice for the most part.
First they pick you up at your hotel, then drive to the beginning of the Toucan trail. You hike for about 45 minutes to a lookout spot and see the volcano, then dark falls and you ca see it spewing out red hot rocks. You ca hear it grumble and roar every 30 seconds or so. Then when you've seen enough, you hike back in the dark to the car.
Then we drove to a thermal bath area. They took us to a free secluded spot that tourists don't know about. It was very relaxing, and was rushing down very fast. We stayed there about 30 minutes ad felt great. Other tours go to nicer areas I guess.
Only thing I didn't like was he brought too few flashlights, ad they were the little ones that had little power. When the batteries died, he had no s[pares. We had to share these little flashlights and hiking rough terrain in the dark was not easy.
I took combination trip Volcano and Hotsprings, in the off season everything is cheaper.
The hotsprings are ofcourse no budget traveling but I am glad to take them...
Its really lovely in the hot water springs.
I went to the Baldi Thermae Hot Springs but there are more, just chose one :)
The lake next to the Arenal Volcano is a nice area to just relax and think. Easily accessable from the national park, the lake is just a nice place to sit. The sunsets over the lake are great, so make sure to have a camera.
