First time to CR -- Things to do/see in Dominical and Orosi Valley, Cartago?

by ShelleinKC

We are leaving in 2 weeks for Costa Rica -- will be driving to Hotel Rio Perlas in Orosi Valley, Cartago for the first night and then on to Dominical for the rest of the week. Would appreciate info on what to expect and recommendations on things to do and places to eat in those areas. If someone can recommend where to grocery shop in the Dominical area, that would be great too.

Also, we don't speak any Spanish and I'm a bit worried about getting lost and not being able to communicate with anyone. Should I be concerned?

Dominical is small, I don't think you will have any problem finding the grocery store. Hopefully someone can tell you for sure. Didn't need one while we were there so wasn't really looking. Lots of americans there so your lack of spanish shouldn't be a problem. Cartago, of course the Basilica. Orosi Valley a lovely area. Don't miss the old church there and of course the Cachi dam is a biggie.

As far as getting lost, you shouldn't have too much trouble. As long as you are patient, sign language can go a long way. If that doesn't work try again down the road. A lot of people speak at least a little english these days. Have a small latin american phrase book. It could help in a pinch.

Once south of San Jose you shouldn't have too much trouble. The road to Dominical from San Isidro is very good. Do be careful when driving through Cerro de la Muerta. It can get really foggy. Better to go through there in the a.m. If you find yourselves having trouble finding your way out of San Jose just suck it up and ask a taxi driver to help lead you out. You won't be the first and you won't be the last. I talked to a guy one time that spent 5hrs trying to find his way out of the city before he hired one.

I would recommend the Berndstrom and Berndstrom (sp?) map for driving. I bought mine at Barnes and Noble book store. It could be ordered on line from them also.
