Arenal Volcano resorts
by TheTravelSlut about Tabacon Resort & Spa
The Tabacon Resort is one of the most luxurious resorts in the Arenal volcano area. I could have spent a week here and been happy.
Tabacon came highly recommended and I can see why. It met or exceeded my expectations.
THE TRAVEL SLUT TIP: If their rates are a bit much for travellers on a budget, stay in a less expensive hotel or motel nearby and buy a day pass for the Tabacon Resort and spend a day enjoying all of the resort's amenities such as their hot springs, spa treatments, bars and restaurants.
http://www.tabacon.com Tabacon's Ave del Paraiso (Bird of Paradise) restaurant serves delicious International and Costa Rican cuisine and their Los Toucanes is a gourmet restaurant located next to the Tabacon Lodge swimming pool and wet bar.
Swim up to the wet bar where you can enjoy a wide variety of tropical drinks and cocktails or delight yourself with CocoLoco at the Sun Deck areas adjacent to the naturally heated swimming pool. You may also enjoy their Happy Hour at the Palenque Bar located in the tropical gardens surrounded by hot springs and rain forest.

This hotel is a comfortable international First Class property with nice large rooms, some with view of the volcano. The location is great, very close to the Arenal volcano and hosts the Tabacon Hotsprings 300 meters down the road.
The breakfast buffe is great, as is the pool. The tour desk will help you book a variety of tours.

Hot springs spa at the foot of Arenal Volcano
by OCNJBritt about Tabacon Hot Springs Resort
The Arenal Volcano area is home to one of the country's most well-known resorts, Tabacon Hot Springs. With natural springs and pools it is a refreshing daily excursion. Buffet food is extravagant and the bars are always open. Overnights are optional at the resort. I found that a day visitor pass satisfied my desire for a lil luxury and R&R. Open air natural hot bath springs of thermo- mineral water, waterfalls, pools and chutes are all fed by the volcano.
If you feel a rumble while your sleeping, it is not a large truck passing by. It is the rumblings of Arenal Volcano and what a feeling...the earth churning beneath you, sleeping above the earth's oven. Spa treatments, elaborate buffet, day pases available, Learning experience re: the science of hot and cold springs
A must stay at Arenal Volcon
by mvnup2 about Tabacon
The hotel was clean and staff friendly. We were greated with cool towels and a fruity drink. Rooms were nice. Pool was less than expected. Landscape was perfect. The view of the volcano was nice. Don't expect to see the top of it or any lave though. We didn't. The best part is the hot springs. One of the most romantic, beautiful places I have ever been. A must stop if your anywhere near the area

Tabacon or Lost Iguana in Arenal
by ashgould
Any thoughts on which would be better? Our 2 teenagers might like all the action at Tabacon but I've read some reviews that complain about musty rooms and bad service. Will be there in March.

I thought Tabacon was crowded. They bus people in from the city for the day. There is a hot spring called Eco-Thermale where you can go for an afternoon soak and get a good meal.Excellent Tico food.I stayed at Arenal Lodge-very nice but maybe dull for your kids-Pura Vida

I have read those same reviews about the musty room. I haven't read that very often. I have read that the dinner buffet isn't all that great. You will be there during the driest time of year and I don't think it should be too bad. The kids would probably love being able to go to the hot springs at any time. It is busy during the day with the tourists that are bused in but in the evening after they leave it is beautiful there. We stayed locally and just visited in the evening and it was busy but not horribly so.
That is a pretty busy time of year so everything will be busy. I do hope you can get reservations at either of those places.

I was in CR November 2004 and I believe the Lost Iguana wasn't yet completed. I remember it being on the far side of Lake Arenal, and would therefore recommend a stay at Tabacon, instead. Tabacon is more centrally located to the activities in the area than the area close to the Hanging Bridges. As we learned, traveling the road around the lake (especially at night) took up far more time than we had expected. We stayed in the Arenal Lodge, and a trip to the Hot Springs or into Tabacon took hours. Once you see the hanging bridges, there is relatively little to see for the hours of travel we drove on that side of the lake.

gardengnome,
You will be interested to know that the Lost Iguana is actually closer to Tabacon than Arenal Lodge. You don't have to drive around the lake at all to get to it.
A look at arenal.net will show you where most of the places are.
