Buena Vista Lodge: Something for everyone
The Buena Vista Lodge is just outside the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, and 20 miles from Liberia (and an hour from the airport.) It used to be a large cattle ranch, but after the government took the land around the volcano to preserve it the ranchers switched to tourism.
The hotel has 80 rooms of various types. Mine was very comfortable, but without phone or TV. There are 4 restaurants, 3 lakes, a spa, a soccer field, and 2 pools on this very large property. It is spread out, and requires a lot of walking to get from one place to another.
They offer hiking trails, horseback riding, hot springs visits, canopy tours, zip lines, and a 425-meter water slide. (I didn’t take advantage of them.)

Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa: Nice Resort in Costa Rica
This is a nice resort on a black sand beach. Rooms are in double cottages. There are two pools (one for families and another at the spa for quiet adult relaxation). Massages are offered, along with water sports and a tour office. We went ziplining. There is a shuttle that will take you anywhere you want to go at the resort, which is spread over an area too large to walk. There is a free car park, but you cannot drive your car around the resort. The nearest town, Coco Beach, is about a 20 min. drive, so a rental car is a necessity. The food at the resort is a bit pricey and not that great, but there are many restaurant choices in town. I liked this resort a lot. It has nice views and is located in a more rural area of Costa Rica with lush rainforests nearby.
This is one of the nicest places to stay in Liberia. It is easy to get to the beach. The staff makes things easy with the free car park, shuttle service, and tour office on the grounds. Also, the beds are comfortable. We had a bathtub and a fridge.

Fiesta Premiere and Spa: Eden's Garden
We were brought to our rooms by a trolly. Were were given a bungalow style room. Something I've always wanted. We had a beautiful deck to relax on. The grounds were so lush and green it was like nothing i've ever seen before.
The rooms were nice and they were a good size. We had no problems with the room. Just be aware that they DO NOT stock your fridge with anything other then water and that is only done on the first day. They do have water filling stations around the resort so remember to keep your bottles.
You can drink the water in Costa Rica it is completely safe. The staff was amazing. We hung out with a few of them on a regular basis. We made sure that we participated in all the activities
They offer many free activities such as Kayaking tour, biking tour, walking tours and snorkling tours. We took advantage of each of these and it was well worth it.
We had a great time with all the tours and really didn't have to pay for anything. We made sure that we tiped them all really well for their efforts.
If you get to this resort say hi to Dennis and Ricardo.
This is a smaller resort and had MANY Canadians. This was actually really cool.
They have MANY free activities which is really rare. They have a beatufiul volcanic (black)sand beach.
The views from the 400 rooms is outstanding. There is also sunset tour that you can take which will give you the most beautiful sunset.

Pato Loco Inn: Quiet AC hotel in Playas de Coco
Six nights, January 2006. Very nice small hotel about 800 meters from the beach. The location is well away from the noisy night life of the vibrant town of Playas de Coco. The AC works well, and is probably need for comfortable sleeping in the hot dry season. (We used it each night.)
There is a restaurant attached. We only ate breakfast there. It serves the only American breakfast (bacon and eggs) in town. The restaurant has an Italian theme, and is closed on Thursday,
There are only 4 or 5 rooms, and two apartments. Reservations are required, contact by email at email@example.com @racsa.co.cr
The swimming pool is deep and cool, a pleasent place to relax.
There is a large common room with a pool table.
The grounds are secure, and there is a night watchman on duty.

Hotel Liberia: RELAXED FEELING IN LIBERIA
This hotel is recommended in the guide books and I really liked the outdoor lounge, where I had breakfast with Birgit, a German girl I met there. My room was very basic, with bathroom and fan. Clean enough, but nothing to really rave about. The administrator Beto was very talkative and gave us tons of information and advice but we didn't understand everything he said because of his thick accent. The hotel is located in the centre so everything was close. I paid $10 for the night, simple buffet breakfast was about $2,50.

Allegro Papagayo Resort: Great Service, nice setting
The service was good and the rooms were nice. It is an all inclusive, and the food was good with lots of variety even for veggies! The resort is set on a STEEP hill, with the pool at the bottom (near the beach) and the lobby at the top. There are 15 - 3 storey buildings with the rooms. They have open air hallways and no elevators. The resort offers a shuttle service continually during the day to get you up the hill. It is next to crazy to attempt climbing it at high noon.
Our room unfortunately had a problem with the AC. This did not seem to be a problem for anyone else in our group as our room was the only one I heard of that did not have a remote for the A/C. Somehow it was like our room was never up grated to the new system and it was continually tripping the breaker or leaking water. This was the only negative thing about our stay.
Great view from the rooms! Interesting beach and an additional beach owned by the resort was only a 10 minute ride away, had a white sand (but was coarser than at the resort) and clear water. The water was so clear actually that we could watch the fish swim around our feet. The resort has the largest pool in Central America, with a swim up bar. The beach is great for finding shells, hermit crabs and blue crabs, but it isn't the white sand so many people desire, because it is formed for the volcanic activity in the area and is therefore black. Not having been anywhere with "nice white sand beaches" this didn't bother me, but many people we dissapointed. Actually I thought that the sand was very fine and soft and not rocky at all. This means that it is SUPER hot! Hotter than normal sand.
The resort also has a hiking trail that is very well marked and a great way to see and explore the area.
