Playa Potrero
Playa Potrero, located on the aptly named Potrero Bay, sits just across from the better known and hence more developed Playa Flamingo. Potrero proper consists of the prerequisite Costa Rican Soccer field, a must to be included on the national map, a few small stores and restaurants, school, Post Office, church along with a moderately sized residential area to the north of the road along the beach. Most just drive by it and never know it is there. The population is still mostly locals, Tico’s and Tica’s, who comprise the working force. Typically, they are very kind and gracious and a true pleasure to encounter.
There are two primary routs into Potrero, the Monkey Trail from the north and the road to Flamingo. From East to West Potrero begins where it meets Playa Flamingo at Surf Side and continues through Playa la Penca, Playa Prieta and ends where it meets Playa pan de Azucar, Sugar Beach.
In the last two years Playa Potrero has been discovered, as I did a few years earlier, and the growth of mega-buck resort homes is unbelievable. Between Surf Side and Sugar Beach there are several projects underway. The new development is predominately private residences and vacation condos and not the large corporate owned resort development. Although I know that is coming soon, as well.
I have a house there and just love it! There are several rentals available including mine, for those who prefer to avoid the large hotel, prepackaged, all indulgent itinerary. If you would rather stay in a private villa, enjoy your quiet, cook your own food when desired, then Potrero is worth investigating.
Pura Vida!
