More about The Hideaway Hotel Playa Samara
After spending 3 weeks traveling throughout Costa Rica, what a treat it was to finally find an affordable place with fantastic accommodations. The whole place is gorgeous. The rooms are large with high ceilings, large bathroom, and very comfortable beds. The owners built this place from scratch, just finishing this last year. Everything is of American-quality standards. The pool is perfect and the landscaping, once it is fully grown out, is going to be spectacular. The Hideway is nestled within the trees, so there are really no views beyond the immediate location, but it is a mere 100 meters to the ocean! You cannot beat this. Rosy and her staff could not have been more accommodating, sweet, and professional. The landscaper even fixed my flat tire! The only negative... it would have been great if they owned a few kayaks. Instead, you have to pay $40 per person to rent one, which also includes scheduling. We wanted to kayak every day out to the pink-sand island, but $80 per day was cost-prohibitive. Other than that, The Hideaway is the perfect place to stay.
Somes serious problems
What is said here about this hotel is true. But there is also what is not said. All air conditioners are grouped and placed on the back of the two small buildings. If unfortunately you have one of the four rooms concerned you may have the vibration and noise of one, two ... up to six machines. Unable to rest or sleep. To this question (we had the room n° 5) the hotel did not know to say except to mention ear plugs! Another problem is breakfast. In a country where the hotels offer beautiful buffets, this hotel offers the minium. Exemple : once swallowed the two half toasts included in the price of your room you will only have to pay extra for extra bread! Same for eggs: one but not two. Finally, it seems that the owner is especially interested in doing business with tourism from the USA. Why not ? So the non-US do not seem to be very welcome. Having been deprived of hot water during 24 hours we have not even been entitled to an apology. And after our question about the air conditioners, we no longer got any "good morning" from the boss despite he was next to our table. Terrible people we are,... raising a problem of silence during the night for a quite expensive room !
Great location, nice place
Myself and 10 others stayed at the Hideaway for 5 days and it was fantastic. The location is a 1 minute walk to a quiet section of beautiful beach where you can have the whole beach to yourself. Trees all around, monkeys coming thru daily, birds, ocean sounds at night. The hotel is small with 12 rooms, a pool, indoor/outdoor eating area, nice modern and spacious rooms, friendly and helpful staff who will help set up tours and other travel. The hotel is a 30 min walk down the beach to town or a 5 min cab ride into the town of Samara. Also only a 10 min walk to Carillo Beach, another beautiful long and quiet beach. The amenities are nice, food options limited but good breakfast, drinks and pasta dishes. A definite worthwhile choice in Samara and Samara is a beautiful beach.
Keep this Hotel A Secret
The only reason I hesitate to write a review is because this seems to be a wonderful secret. The Hideaway could be renamed Dos Playas because it is nestled walking distance between two of the loveliest beaches I have ever visited. The Hotel is brand new with lovely furnishings,in a cool relaxing color scheme. There are only 15 rooms and it is run by the owners. It is a wonderful spot to relax and unwind from the world. Don't tell anyone else!!
This is a very nice property, generally built to U.S. standards. The rooms are large, attractive and comfortable. The only complaint about the rooms is that the water temperature in the shower needs more or less continual adjustment as you shower. The portion of Samara beach that is close to the hotel is overrated by most of the reviewers. This is the southernmost portion of Samara beach and is used mainly by fishermen. There is no place to get out of the sun (i.e., no trees that shade usable portions of the beach), and there is essentially no dry beach at high tide. At low tide, the beach is wide and much more attractive. We never saw any sunbathers actually use this portion of the beach. Walking to town along the beach is quite a hike--30 minutes or more. On the other hand, the Hideaway is only an 11-12 minute walk along the road to Carillo Beach, which is a wonderful beach, shaded by rows of large palm trees. Walking to Carillo Beach (and possibly seeing monkeys on the way) is much preferable to trying to use Samara; the only exception to this observation is that there is a beautiful sunset over Samara, which you should make an effort to see. The hotel lent us plastic chairs that we used on Carillo Beach. There were howler monkeys in the trees close to the hotel on two of the four days that we were there, and that was a treat. Breakfast at the hotel could be improved by serving actual orange juice, rather than the Hi-C type product that is actually served, and by providing two eggs, rather than one (however, when we requested two eggs, the server happily provided them without additional charge). Rosy is accommodating--more efficient than ingratiating. The employees were very good. The pool is very nice, warm and never crowded. We did not eat meals other than breakfast at the hotel, but we did order snacks during the day, which were good--the guacamole is freshly made and very tasty, and the ice cream sundaes are great. The bar serves all kinds of drinks, at reasonable prices. With respect to the town of Samara itself, it has little in the way of shops, it is not particularly clean and there do not seem to be a lot of interesting restaurants. That being said, we highly recommend the Mexican restaurant Sol Azteca--the enchiladas are as good as any we have had in Mexico. For bars on the beach, I would avoid the over-hyped Shake Joe's and head for La Velas Latina (that may not be quite right), which was very laid back and enjoyable.
Hideaway Hotel is a hidden GEM
We pulled into the Hideaway Hotel planning to stay one or two nights. Five nights later we had to force ourselves to move on from this hidden gem and continue our travels in CR. This hotels 12 luxury suites are beautifully appointed with lovely furniture, comfortable beds and large sparkling clean bathrooms. With a swimming pool on property and the beach just a 1 minute walk down a dirt road there is always a place to cool off. The staff and hotel owner are very attentive and always willing to do what ever they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You'll feel like you are a guest in someones beautiful home. The hotel is about a 40 minute walk to town center via the beach or about a 5 minute taxi ride. A typical tico breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs, toast, juice and coffee is included every day. We did not have dinner at the hotel as there are some great restaurants in town which hotel owner, Rosie, was very willing to inform us about. Rosie and her staff will also make all of your arrangements for any of the area's wonderful attractions and activities. We loved this hotel and look forward to going back. I have already recommended this hotel to a friend.
The Hideaway is a gem in the Costa Rican crown. With air travel being what it currently is, this was such a pleasant way to unwind. Monkeys playing in the trees next to the pool and the freshest fruit on the table, along with the best coffee, you just wanted to sit there all day and read/relax. After breakfast every morning we walked into town along the beach, about 3 miles each way, a wonderful way to start the day. The tidal change is amazing.
The rooms are very large and exceptionally clean. Rosy has the best staff around. They all make you feel like you are staying in their home. Having the owner living on the property is a plus, we arrived late but she "kept the light on" for us. She knows the area and will help find whatever it is that you want to do. The staff facilitated changing our return flight from Liberia Airport, a 2 ½ hr drive in the dark, to Corrillo, a 5 minute drive from the hotel. Don't blink while trying to find the airport terminal, though, you could confuse it for a bus stop. It turned out to be the best flight of our trip.
We already have recommended this hideaway to friends and hopefully we will be able to return before everyone finds out about it.
Beautiful place and wonderful people
Great new hotel at the quiet end of Playa Samara. Run very well by Rosie and her staff. Having looked around the area, I would say this is one of the best, if not the best. Our seven days there was extrordinary and would like to return.

Quiet resort outside of town, visits with Howler monkeys morning and night
We booked a trip to Costa Rica without any hotel reservations. We happened to find the Hideaway Hotel due to other hotels being booked up. What a fortune for us. The staff are multi-talented. Beautiful clean new spacious rooms. We would go back in a minute! Thanks for making our adventure memorable. Kari and Dan
Epitome of Relaxation
Our stay at The Hideaway was the most relaxing vacation we have ever taken. The hotel is a gem, situated within minutes from 2 beaches. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. The grounds are beautiful with an inviting pool and waterfall. Rosy's love of the garden is evident in the landscaping. Rosy and her staff are topnotch. They are all so accommodating whether they were making excursion arrangements, dining suggestions or just ensuring we had everything we needed. Their attention to detail was of the utmost. Of course, Max, the dog, made it complete for us!! Kudos to Rosy, Doug, and the staff. We'll be back to this great "hideaway."
