Scuba diving

by Ingeborga

My husband and I will be in CR for 10 days in January. Can anyone recommend good diving sites and perhaps good diving guides? We have our PADI licenses already.

Re: Scuba diving

I dive out of Flamingo, with either Aquacenter, or Pacific Coast Dive Center. Both good operations that operate out of the Flamingo Marina Resort, or Flamingo Beach Resort respectively. Flamingo is the closest jumping off point for the Catalina Islands, where most of the diving on the North Pacific is done. You can also find dive centers further north at Ocotal/Hermosa/Coco area. Boats will also take you to the Catalinas from Tamarindo, just a longer boat ride.

If you have been lots of other places, you will find diving here rather mediocre, unless you get a great encounter, which is possible for Manta, Whales... Good luck.

Travel Tips for Tamarindo

Exit Fee

by jenn_d

Costa Rica charges a $26 pp exit fee at the airport. You will not be able to check in for your departing flight without receipt for this tax. A good idea might be to pay the fee in the terminal when you arrive as it is one less thing you'll need to worry about on your day of departure.

Catch of the day - Costa Brava style

by holligolytly about El Jardin del Eden

This was a very nice (casual fine dining) type restaurant at a luxury hotel in Tamarindo. The food was excellent as well as the service. The hotel is located on a small hill at only 3 walking minutes from the beach. It features a magnificent view of the entire Tamarindo Bay, one of the best places to enjoy the magnificent sunsets of the Pacific Ocean! I really loved the red snapper served costa brava style (the catch of the day with their house creamy sauce) Delicious! The salads were also very good.

pizza...

by pollon

you cannot instead avoid pizza... lots of places offer it and if you allow me a judgement: at playa Tamarindo you can find an almost perfectly Italian pizza in the local of which sorry, I cannot remember the name, but it's the one divided in two sections (on the left restaurant, on the right pizzeria), the pizzeria nearer to the main square on the beach.
but a really good pizza is the one baked in a wood oven at playa Grande by the hombre español as I nickenamed the place but his restaurant is El Fogon, in the pic, and it also offers overnighting.

THE BEST SUNSET THAN I'VE...

by balieyes

THE BEST SUNSET THAN I'VE NEVER SEEN
Playa Tamarindo: There are two spots here worth trying, Pico Pequeño, a rocky point in front of the hotel Tamarindo; and Bel Estero, an excellent river mouth break. You'll find a decent beach break here, and it makes a good base for exploring other surfing spots nearby. Nothing to write home about, but it beats getting a job

Surf in Costa Rica,Tamarindo

by Strategic_Dolphin

"More than 10 spots walking distance"

The Surf:
Surf Costa Rica means warm water ,tropical beaches, surf breaks everywhere, reef breaks, sandbars & river mouth waves, surfing in Tamarindo means all that at the same place. Tamarindo and the surrounding areas provides at least 11 different waves at 25 min. walking distance the faraway one, plan your surf trip to Witch's Rock or setup a half day trip to the uncrowded south from Tamarindo, this classic surf village located on the north pacific coast of Costa Rica has two surf seasons, Nov. to March (off shore winds & clean swells).
April to October (big swells & some rain). All surfing levels will find dream waves around Tamarindo Beach, just wake up early and go for it,green waves and empties line ups are waiting, Banana Surf Club 'll help you to surf Costa Rica's best waves
