The Elusive Capitan Suizo!!

Having stayed at the Peace Lodge at La Paz Waterfall Gardens, I considered Capitan Suizo in Tamarindo as our next resting place since the two hotels belong to "Small Distinctive Hotels Costa Rica", six hotels in different locations throughout the country which claim to be of an extremely high standard. They are also at a very high cost and since we blew our budget at the waterfalls we had to settle for the less distinctive but very comfortable Laguna del Cocodrilo in Tamarindo.

However, we were curious and decided to set out to find Capitan Suizo and have a drink and maybe stay for dinner and generally have a good nose around.... We couldn't find it!!! We had maps, asked directions, walked for ages... and Tamarindo isn't really that big!! Jonathan and I have since come to the conclusion that this particular hotel doesn't exist. Or it is located on a cloud that can only be reached by very rich people... We would be delighted to hear from anyone who has stayed in, worked at or has any proof that this place is real! Thank you.

Unique Quality: Invisibility.

Tropical Paradise on Playa Tamarindo Beach

An 8 minute walk on the beach, south of Tamarindo (and just before reaching Langosta) is Hotel Capitan Suizo. The lobby on the road is pretty but walk down the steps to the hotel room, bungalows (which we stayed in both), pool, bar/restaraunt encased in a glass fence next to the beach. The glass door to this property is open for visitors until late at night. There are lounging chairs, hammocks, etc. on the beach - which is a good swimming area. The monkeys met us as we entered our first of 6 nights here. The bar staff were so much fun that our young adult children went to Tamarindo to the bars two nights but preferred to play guitar, drink and converse with the Tico staff at Capitan. Our bungalows were not airconditioned but with the breeze and ceiling fans, the end of May was just fine without them. They organize snorkeling - we used Mandingo Sail and had a wonderful time - and estuary boat trips, the horses for trail riding (am not sure if one can ride on the beach now or not) is right across the road from the lobby. The restaraunt has great food - the chef if German. Breakfast is free (there is scrambled eggs, etc). We loved it and hope to go back, not to Tamarindo, necessarily, but to Hotel Capitan Suizo. Go to www.visittamarindo.com and click on lodging/accomadations We walked the beach to Langosta and Villa Alegre B&B looked great too. The owners, the Lawsons, are involved with getting school supplies to the children.

Unique Quality: Great location for watching the sunset. The pool is beautiful and clean. An iguana is usually sunning near, but they don't bother you. The landscape is just like a tropical paradise. Monkeys were not seen every day but you can hear them most mornings. We felt very safe due to security and in room safes.

The best I saw

This is the note I posed for Cala Luna:

The facilities were impressive, but although the hotel description said that you "Could hear the waves" from your room, a decent beach was only to be found at adjoining resorts. The front staff were unimpressive. We had a 2-bedroom villa, on a dirt road along which the staff had to schlepp luggage, with a/c only in the bedrooms; the main living area was rarely below 87 degrees. The food in the restaurant was quite good and the sushi bar was a plus. If I had to do it again, I would stay at the adjoining Capitan Suizo - the beach is right past the pool area and the rooms and grounds are spectacular.

Big and beautiful

I only stayed at this hotel for one night, but I would highly recommend it. It's one of the most expensive hotels in the area, but for what you get, it's in a completely other league from the other hotels such as the Diria.

Unique Quality: The bartender was really cool. He was better than Tom Cruise in cocktail.

Fabulous, friendly hotel

Hotel Capitan Suizo is the place to stay in Tamarindo.

The property: Lush gardens, welcoming pool, beautiful stretch of beach, comfy lounge chairs.

The bar/restaurant: Food was fabulous - especially the dinners, the drinks great.

The Rooms: Big and clean, but bring an alarm clock.

What really made the stay enjoyable was the staff. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I went on a couple of tours organized by the hotel and had a very good experience. I had a great time hanging out and having cocktails at the open air bar and talking with people from all over the world.

When I return I will definitely stay here again.

Fabulous Get Away

by A TripAdvisor Member

My husband and I stayed at the Capitan Suizo for 4 nights. This was the first stop on our honeymoon and was probably the best! We stayed in a private bungalow and enjoyed the extra privacy. We had been told that the bungalows weren't air conditioned but were pleasantly surprised to find they had been recently upgraded.

The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. We enjoyed chatting with the bartender who has a great sense of humor and were impressed by the easy going nature of the entire staff.

However, the best part about the Capitan Suizo is the wildlife. We watched pelicans fly over the water all day from the beach at the hotel, were charmed by the tree full of monkeys outside our bungalow and were amazed by the number of iguanas that sunbathed on the restaurant's roof.

relaxing and beautiful!!

by TripAdvisor Member warmwater74

Capitan Suizo is a beautiful, private hotel that emphasizes quiet relaxation. My husband and I stayed for 3 nights and really enjoyed everything about the gorgeous surroundings. The atmosphere is something out of Fantasy Island ( remember the old show...) the flowers, trees and wildlife ( monkeys, racoons, hummingbirds, squirrels...)almost seem unreal. The pool is awesome--it just seems to ooze relaxation.

We stayed in a regular room with ac, it does get muggy at night, so we used the ac. It was strange that is no alarm clock in the room, but the wake up calls were very reliable. The design of the room is unique, the split level is a nice feature. The breakfast was very good, tons of fresh fruits, breads and delicious juices. We found dinner to be average, nothing too spectacular.

Overall, we would highly recommend this hotel. It is beautiful and in a great location ( out of the center of town). The small size is very nice, too. We really started to see alot of the same faces in the morning at breakfast, it felt like we were members of an exclusive club! We can't wait to go back!

Pure Comfort In All Ways

by TripAdvisor Member Holidevil

We booked a three night stay in early Dec. 05. It was the most enjoyable accommodation of all our 2 week Costa Rica holiday stretch. Our room was an upper floor unit with the electric fans. It was large and well designed to be effectively comfortable from the heat. Monkeys and racoons often nestled into the branches near our balcony -- almost close enough to touch. The pool was large with amiable people (and even a few resident iguanas) lounging near the edge.
The staff was helpful, very easygoing and friendly. Maxwell behind the bar is a natural entertainer -- a treat to watch in action. The restaurent served delicious meals. The beach was one the most beautiful we encountered and the water perfect for a refreshing dip, just a few steps past the hotel grounds.
The hotel was close enough to easily walk to town along the beach. Yet it was far enough away to be isolated from the noise, dust and congestion of the busy streets there.
There is no other hotel I would consider in Tamarindo. It seemed to be perfect in every way. What a delightful surprise and a lucky pick for us. We'd return to Capitan Suizo again without second thought. A real example of "Pura Vida" indeed.

Bad Experience

by A TripAdvisor Member

We recently stayed one night of a planned 5 night stay at the Captian Suizo. To our surprise the hotel was undergoing a major renovation. Apparently they were closed in September but had not finished when we arrived. There was sawing and hammering from 6am until around 7pm, even though we were told when we checked in they would start late and finish early. There were construction workers everywhere, at one point they were on ladders looking in the top windows of our bungalow. We complained and were at first told we were lucky because our bungalow had been upgraded (it was not finished) and we were paying the old rate. Then we were told they would let us stay somewhere else, finally we were reluctantly told we would get a 15% discount. It became clear they were only partially open and they did were not providing many of their normal services. They could not even give us a canopy tour brochure because the activities desk was under construction. I can imagine the place would be nice without the construction but we were very dissapointed in the way the owners were handling the situation. We found a different place to stay and were very happy at the new place.

Capitan Suizo - Playa Tamarindo

by TempNomad

We're searching for romantic, relaxing and comfortable beach destination to have our belated honeymoon. The Costa Rica Moon Travel Book highlights Capitan Suizo as an ideal choice. It looks lovely, but we can't find a specific web-page that features photos of the rooms. Has anyone been there? Thanks for your help!

p.s.--is Playa Tamarindo overrun with tourists in February?
