Horrible and expensive option
I stayed with two friends for one night in one of their "cabanas" for 60 K colones ($120). The cabana was horrible to say the least - it had no basic things such as hand soap or hand towels in the bathroom. The pool towels given and the beds linen and blankets looked like they had been washed hundreds of times and even had holes. Also, half of the channels in the small TV would not work. The toilet stopped working after the first flush, and we were told the maintenance crew had left at 6 pm so they were unable to help us. Additionally, the cabin was unventilated and had very poor lighting.
The hotel itself was on deplorable conditions, and the breakfast buffet was very limited in options (all of them fried and unhealthy). The front desk service was also inefficient. Additionally, even though the view is pretty, there is nothing much to do in Birri and no good eating options outside the hotel. My recommendation if you want a mountain hotel close to San Jose , stay in a hotel in Monte de la Cruz.
Since there are so many universities in Heredia, there also seem to be quite a few bars. 2 blocks west of the Nacional University, you will find Rancho de Fofo with two levels and great food. Across the street is another great bar with balcony open to the street. Down the block is Boulevard with beer on tap at the tables and a pool table upstairs. A mile away In San Pablo is Cocktails, with a funky interior and a great dance floor, pool, darts and tons of parking. (which btw is sadly lacking in the downtown area)
