Fantastic Jungle/Beach setting

We stayed at the Villas del Caribe in Dec, 2004. We paid about $50/night which included breakfast. Or unit consisted of two floors, a downstairs living area with a kitchen and bath. There were no in room safes or TV. The construction of the inn is rather rustic and is not to the higher standard of Tico construction we had seen elsewhere. Still, it was ok. The upstairs was a large bedroom with a narrow covered balconey. The bedroom had two sets of French doors opening onto the balconey looking towards the ocean through a jungle sttting. You could hear the ocean and see small parts of it through the filtered view. There were two hammocks on the balconey. We realy enjoyed sleeping with the doors open at night as it would often rain fiercly and the sounds were wonderful, In the early morning there was much noise from the birds and nearby monkeys. Breakfast was served in the open air restaurant on site and was good but very simple. Yogurt, dry cereal, fruit, toast, Cooked breakfasts were available for an additional charge. This inn is quite a ways outside of Puerto Viejo, in Cocles, with not much else around it. Hence it is quite. The beach was near to empty whenever we were on it. There is a bicycle rental shop a short walk down the street and a very small grocery store across the street from the inn. There is an excellent soda about a 10 minute walk up the road toward Puerto Viejo called Karen's, run by a Nicaraugan lady. Puerto Viejo is an easy 20 minute bicycle ride away and Manzanilla an easy 30 minute bicycle ride to the south. We saw sloths and numerous monkeys along the way to Manzanilla, right beside the road. In Manzanila is the trail head to the Gandoca Reserve, a fantastic experience in itself, not to be missed if you are in the area.
