More about Hotel AmaTierra

Stayed for our November trip

by TripAdvisor Member syracusianscholars

Bob and Jill were wonderful, warm, hospitable hosts. I enjoyed the yoga lesson that Jill provided, while my wife really enjoyed reading in the hammock. There was live music on our first night, and on our second night there was a Thanksgiving dinner which made us miss home a little less. We hope to recommend AmaTierra to our families and friends should they have the opportunity of visiting the wonderful country of Costa Rica.

A Delightful Stay

by TripAdvisor Member JimNorthCarolina

This is a charming small resort lovingly run by Bob and Jill. The setting in beautiful and the pace can be as slow or active as you choose. It is near to Turu Ba Ri private nature preserve where one can do anything from thrill activities (canopy tours, "superman flying") to the quiet with well guided nature tours. They have a short horse back ride available, but most guest at Ama Tierra seem to enjoy a longer ride done by one of the local farmer/policeman/store owner from the little village near the hotel. Some guest use Ama Tierra as a base and go on longer excursions such as the pacific coast for the day, returning to the hotel in the evening. For us, one of the greatest pleasure was the music that surrounds Bob and Jill. One evening, Jill played on the piano while my family sang Christmas carols. On a second evening, a local group sang and played guitars. The most remarkable musical experience was the spontaneous concert given by Manuel Obregon. Manuel is a Costa Rican treasure who was a guest at Ama Tierra--he played on the piano that Bob and Jill had lovingly had shipped from Tuscon to Ama Tierra. Our concert was to the small group of guest and employees at the hotel rather than the thousands who would hear him in concert the following night. We would recommend Ama Tierra to anyone who is looking for an escape and who prefers a small resort and peaceful setting over the chaos of the typical tourist sites or large resorts.

Lovely Respite

by TripAdvisor Member raincityfamily

Our family of four (2 boys- 11 and 14) spent 3 lovely nights at AmaTierra. This was our third stop during our trip to Costa Rica and was a perfect way to end an incredible vacation. Prior to even arriving at Ama Tierra, Bob called us to ask what types of things our family enjoyed doing. We were well cared for, with Bob and Jill attempting, and succeeding to meet all of our needs. The food is fabulous and lovingly prepared with fresh ingredients. What made AmaTierra different? Morning yoga class with Jill and the birds and sweet air of AmaTierra, an unforgettable massage and treatment by Jill, Popo, our wonderful driver, and meeting and sharing time with the other guests. Bob arranged trips for us to Turu Ba Ri and Carrara National Park. Vince our guide at Carrara was the finest guide we had in CR.

If you are looking for a smaller, more intimate experience in Costa Rica --visit Bob and Jill and AmaTierra. We hope to return.

Paradise Found

We were looking for rest and relaxation but did not want to get bored either. Amatierra was the absolute best and we cannot wait to return again and again. The rooms blended into the forest so we felt one with the abounding nature surrounding us. The temperature was perfect and we were able to keep our windows open and listen to the calls of various tropical birds. Also the rooms were kept emaculate and were very comfortable. The food was delicious! Fresh fruit, vegetables, organic coffee, and homemade meals was something we looked forward to everyday. And most impressive was the hospitality of our hosts Bob and Jill. They were always there ready to accomadate us in any way, from arranging trips, suggesting day activities, yoga classes, massages and just their overall making our trip the best it could be. We were able to spend a day at the beach, go horseback riding in a rural town and countryside, go to a pristine park and always come back to a great meal and relaxing evenings. Don't miss this special eco friendly retreat. It is only going to get better and better and there is so much that is offered that it will fit in to anyone's best vacation plans. I can not say enough good things about this very special place except that I am aready planning a return trip and I guess that speaks for itself.

loved it

by TripAdvisor Member a75

It's a rare thing to be completely satisfied by a meal and a view, but it happened for me at Ama Tierra. The food is excellent, emphasizing fresh local ingredients, and the mountainside setting is intoxicating. The generous owners are attentive but not intrusive. They tended to my desires with the same care they would use in tending to their own, and that is essentially what hospitality is about. I came away after 3 days totally relaxed and with new energy. Imagine what a week would do...

Heaven on Earth

Amatierra was our final destination on our wonderful honeymoon in Costa Rica! For those who have travelled to Costa Rica, you know the food is amazing, the people are pleasant and the weather is unbeatable.
From the first moment we found Amatierra online, we were impressed. From the start, the wonderful owners, Jill & Bob catered to our needs. From advice on itineraries, rental cars and planning our trip, they offered the best. When we couldn't find a hotel in one of our destinations, they called some friends and found it for us.
The resort itself is intimate with only 10 bungallows. The staff was so friendly and the views breathtaking.
In the mornings we would do Yoda will Jill and read by the pool. Then we would have a delicious breakfast overlooking the country on the deck followed by fantastic excursions.
We went horseback riding with the locals to an amazing waterfall. Canopy touring in a nearby park, and listened to live music in the evening on the deck with dinner.
Unlike so many resorts, this truly is a little nest in the middle of the country to relax and eat and stay healthy on your way in or out of country.
We would highly recommend this resort and look forward to coming back.

Fantastic experience

by TripAdvisor Member ihandler

We got in on a Saturday afternoon, were blown away by the beauty of the mountains on our ride from the airport. The hotel was just perfect, small cacitas nestled into the mountain with the main building above.

Bob took us to the nearest local town to get some local food (they have a papaya & potato dish that is really great) and a few beers before watching the local rodeo (we happened to pick the right weekend for this, apparently it is an annual event). We saw the dancing Spanish Toppio horses and some bull riding. We were not expecting this at all and it was really great.

We spent time at the Turu Bari park and went zipping over the forest canopy. Scary at first, but a wonderful time. Over the next few days, another national park, the pacific ocean including a spectacular sunset.

Bob and Jill are the perfect hosts. The are very attentive and friendly. Their staff prepares delicious means and the cacitas are very comfortable and cozy.

Don't miss the opportunity to stay here.

The Fabulous AmaTierra

by TripAdvisor Member OneMathias

We had an amazing experience at the AmaTierra!
Bob and Jill are wonderful people on a mission to make the world a better place. They were very hospitable and passionate about what they do.
The food was absolutely divine. It was the best food we had in Costa Rica during the two months we were there. The massage and yoga was very healing and refreshing. The Music we played with Jill was a lot of fun. She's a great musician.
The setting is very beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed every moment at their establishment. It's a wonderful breath of fresh air at the AmaTierra! I would recommend it to anyone that goes through Costa Rica. Thank you Bob and Jill.

Very relaxing; great food!

From warm welcome through check-out four days later, this was the most comfortable, relaxing and interesting place we have been. Perfect site and architecture; clean and well-maintained; amazing views; uniquely good food. Enjoyed yoga instruction and massages; benefitted from careful, thoughtful assessment of some personal health issues.

Beautiful, Peaceful Place and People

by TripAdvisor Member jordanbusch

I get a peaceful sensation every time I think back to our stay at Ama Tierra. The combination of the beautiful surroundings, nice breeze, great food and wonderful hosts are part of what made our stay here an experience that I will cherish forever. Owners Bob and Jill are wonderul, caring, warm people who you will have the chance to get to know if you wish. They are great, genuine people who truly care about your well-being.

The rooms here are clean, airy and subtly elegant. The food is some of the best food we ate while in Costa Rica. Meals on the patios are special as you eat while enjoying the beautiful Costa Rican mountains. The sunsets were amazing as well while the cicadas performed their nightly mating ritual around 6pm. Also, make sure to hit Bob up about his musical knowledge.

We headed to Manuel Antonio National Park after our stay here which was about a two hour drive. This is a perfect place to stop for a couple days after flying into San Jose or before heading back to San Jose. It is a beautiful, short ride (1 1/2 hours) from San Jose. Once you arrive you immediately feel surrounded by the natural beauty. This could also be a great destination in and of itself. My girlfriend and I actually missed Bob and Jill when we left here. Highly recommended!
