The sun can cause pain!

Pack what ever you can carry. A rain jacket is a must along with shoes you don't mind getting wet. Normal common sense.
Take plenty of sun screen. It dosen't take but just a couple of minutes to become a burnt piece of toast! Batteries and film cost a little more so bring plenty of each with you. There are tons of places for back packers to hang a hammock or pitch a tent that are well within budget. As with any tropical location, there are insects that bite, eat, chew or sting no matter what time of day it is. One couple in my group used Deep Woods Off but they got bitten a couple of times. I used 100% Deet and didn't have any problems.
Deet can be found at any outdoor stores.
Surf's Up at Jaco

"Surf's still up at Jaco"
Durring my ten day trip in Costa Rica, three of those days were spent in the surf town of Jaco. Known for its killer waves that atract international acclaim, as well as deadly rip-tides, Jaco has become a Central American Surf Mecca. It is the surfing that drives the economy, and for good reason. The waves are soo hard it is almost impossible to enjoy a leisurely swim (check Manuel Antonio for leisure). This does not make Jaco an undesireable place for someone who doesn't surf, just not as exciting. The nightlife however suits any partiers taste, as Jaco is jam packed with bars and clubs that serve nightly drink specials, often suited to the ladies taste. If you're into debauchery then step right up as Jaco's nightlife also includes plenty of hookers and soft drug dealing. Yes!
