Hi, we just came back from CR and spent 3 days near Arenal. We rented a SUV from Alamo (about 80$) including full insurance for a brand new SUV. It took about 3 hours from San Jose.
We stayed at the Arenal Paradaiso resort. Planned on Tabacon, but it was too cloudy at times and the lava couldnt be seen well on some of the nights. So we opted for Paradaiso for about 80$/night and it has 12 hot spring pools.
We ate dinner mostly downtown Fortuna. The mexican restaurant is pretty good. Entrees from 5$. Recommend the roast chicken for about 10$
Local beer is really good. We drank Imperial beer but there are several other brands.
We did the zip line and sky tram, jungle cruise etc. Good time and full service tours avail from your hotel.
We had a great time and recommend that you do see the Volcano. Even during the day, it is quite impressive...
Beer-Imperial.Has an eagle logo on Bottle ask for Un Mas Aguilar por favor
Pilsen? or Pilsner? is the other popular local...

Jaco was an interesting destination to say the least. I never used more English in a Spanish country before.. This may come as a pleasent bonus to some and as a pensive pause to others.. The town is a major stopping destination on the way down the coast towards Manuel Antonio. It's on a great surfing beach... light brown sand.. and is the Night Sopt of this part of the world. There is an extensive bar/club/restaurat scene.. some sections catering to specificly male clients. There is some shopping ... although much of it is westernized goods (T shirts, Sandles ... etc..etc..) There is plenty of fun to be had here... some nice restaurants and even some nice hotels. Just minuted outside Jaco are several beaches to the south that you can explore as well. They are much more remote and offer even better sunsets.
