Pachamama was across the road from my rental house---good location and ideas in the middle of the trees across the road from the beach. We saw Howler Monkeys every day crossing the trees in the area---Pachamama has bungalows and rooms for rent at cheap prices
from $60 a night. There is also a house fo rent at times so check the website for deals...
good location close to 2-3 restaurants walking distance and taxi ride to many more...
We rented a house via VRBO.com on the beach in Mal Pais---after contacting the owner, we were hoping for privacy, beachfront, room to be comfortable, and a sense of adventure all balled into one rental and came up with #31091. Owners house is right next door (which he rents while he is in the USA) and Chris showed up a day or 2 after we got there---his caretakers Jimmy and Ana can take care of anything provided you speak some Espanol....The house has a bedroom upstairs (steep) with a queen bed and a twin bed and lots of windows open to the sounds of the Pacific Ocean close by---- Downstairs is a kitchen and a large living area with multiple seating areas, a dining area, a bathroom with a large shower, and exits to multiple areas outside with chairs, hammocks and covered areas on the path to the rocky beach. There are not a lot of swimming options immediately in front of the house, but close by are inlets where you can get into the sea for a dip...Best to have a 4X4 or jeep for access to most nicer restaurants---bring goggles for the dusty road---see other tips for more intense ideas....definitely recommended.
on the beach, away from it al, great surfer dude owner
A fairly new backpacker's hotel a few hundred feet from the Crossroads towards Santa Teresa.
There is a small restaurant, internet and is close to the beach for the surfing. Rooms are $30-35 a night.
Franks has lots of different rooms at different prices, a restaurant, a surf shop and more right at the intersection of the Crossroads in Playa Carmen. A little too close to the action for me, it was always a hubbub of activity with the surfers and other young folks. Most rooms have A/C, cable TV, and there is a nice pool and jaccuzzi.
rooms $50 - $100 a night.
close to everything
Casa Azul is right on the beach in Playa Carmen, between Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. It is a large house with rooms on the first flor, a suite on the 2nd and a small casita as well. A pretty blue house, located very close to the Crossroads---not sure about any noise carryover from that.....A large pool, air conditioning, private patios and hammocks are some of the niceties.
Prices range from $125 per night for a room to $800 per night for the whole house.
On the beach in Playa Carmen.
good surf break in front
We really enjoyed our stay at Frank's Place hotel, it was exactly what we were looking for: a clean and confortable hotel run by a tico family where tourists were ticos and foreigners alike.
Veru nice laid back and easy-going atmosphere.
The rooms are great value for the area, delicious breakfast included, the food at the restaurant was a nice surprise and just amazing. Free internet was a plus.
Nice large and peaceful pool area, the best location at 150 meters from the beach and all amenities, helpful staff
We didn't stay here, cause we didn't sleep in Malpa?s, but i've heard about this place - some friends of mine stayed there, and advised it to me.
They actually have houses on the top of the trees with only screens for walls!! It must be a great experience!
At ground level they have a restaurant where they serve breakfast.
It's defenetly my favorite kind of camping while i'm home: we call it wild camping, which basicaly is just put up your tent somewhere out of campgrounds... It's great to sleep staright on the beach.
We didn't do it while on CR, but in St. Teresa beach i saw some people that were styaing at the beach, and it seemed perfect!
It might be illegal, though.... it is in Portugal... The most important thing is respecting the nature not leaving any traces of your presence!
The best place to stay is Hotel Ronny's in Santa Teresa. (506-640-0301) He has a small hotel (10 rooms) that is very very clean and has the coldest air conditioners in Costa Rica. You walk to the beach front in 10 min max, 5 if you hurry. In front of his hotel are 3 different surf breaks. Ronny and his wife serve an unbelievable breakfast with your room rate. He has a very nice tile swimming pool that is cleaned every morning. It is a small family business and he really takes care of his guests. I traveled last fall with my 4 sons for 19 days and stayed with Ronny, my 21 year old travel with 7 friends during Christmas and stayed with Ronny for 11 days and my 17 year old is staying there alone now for 45 days with two of his high school friends and staying at Ronny’s. Ronny enjoys families because he has 2 daughters of his own. Ronny knows everybody and everything to do (he is like the mayor) he has ATV’s for rent; he will have you picked up at the San Jose airport and dropped at the hotel. He serves great Tico food for lunch and diner at great prices $3-$7. If you would like to know more about Mal Pais of Santa Teresa’s email me email@example.com and I will tell you about the dining and lodging around and also the surf spots because we all surfed from the point to Hermosa. If you call Ronny tell him I told you to call and tell him what you need. Have a great trip.
Great service although like alot of things in Costa Rica its all by there time...which is cool...very nice gardens and great food...Frank is an awesome guy when you get to no him.....Rooms and food are very reasonably priced....you want a great deal tell him your gonna stay there for a couple months and pay in advance!!
VERY helping employees..although not all speak english
Stayed at Franks for three nights. It was $20 per night for a single with a ceiling fan and shared bathroom. Pretty cheep when you split it between two people. Clean rooms, close to the beach and there's a restaurant at the hotel that had really good Casados. It also looked like some of the rooms had air conditioning.
Has a pool.
Frank's place, on the crossroad of the cobano road and the beachroad, well if you can call them roads.
It is a nice hotel which caters for almost any budget, cheap basic rooms with shared baths, basic rooms with privat bath and even rooms with airco and tv for familys.
It has a nice restaurant and pool, and is just off the beach (just be carefull, waves can get big)
And there are birds, iguanas, butterflies and all kinds off animals just there.
