More about Hotel Mango Moon
Manuel Antonio's Mango Moon
We stayed at Mango Moon with Jeff and Joni in June of 2005. They were wonderful hosts. We enjoyed our morning conversations with Jeff and his insights in Costa Rican life. Joni helped us with arranging excursions that are interesting and personal. The rooms are lovely with wonderful views. Since it was the Green Season, we were given a two room suite. Each room in the suite has a queen bed connecting to the bathroom. We used the room in the "front" closer to the pool. The trail from the back of the property to the secluded beach is private and afforded a nice intro to the region's nature trails. We loved to just sit in the breakfast "bar" overlooking the cove and watch for monkeys and toucans and parrots. The location of Mango Moon is great. It was easy to catch a cab (Joni would call the cab and they would show up in 10 min max) to get to anywhere in Manual Antonio. Although within walking distances there are also choices of many nifty restaurants. I would not hesitate to return.
Relaxation in paradise
We just returned from 5 days 4 nights at Mango Moon. Prior to the trip we had a hard time making a decision as to which accomodations to stay at in MA. Thanks to the reviews on this website we chose Mango Moon and we are sooo glad we did. The positive reviews are right on target when describing this B&B. The views are spectacular, the service is superb and the location is perfect, off the main road but within walking distance to resturants and shops. Hiking trail to a small private beach or drive/walk to end of road to a larger although spectacular beach. Although the owners were out of town while we were there thier son Jeff was very informative and interesting to converse with each day. Carlos was also very helpfull with recommendations for dining and activities, or just socializing at the bar. Monkeys, Monkeys, Monkeys every moring while we ate our complimentary breakfast and enjoyed the view. What a pleasure to come back to our room after a full day of exploring and hiking only to find cold air conditioning, hot water, comfortable beds and no bugs! Would highly recommend staying at Mango Moon.
A True Intimate Hotel !
What a great place to stay in Manuel Antonio. Rooms were clean and tastefully appointed. Great views of the Pacific from the rooms and balconies. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast complete with the traveling monkey show. I can't say enough about the owners and staff. We plan to return here again on out future visits to Manuel Antonio.
Not a good value
We have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, Europe and elsewhere. We traveled to Costa Rica for nine days with two children aged 3 and 7. Mango Moon was our least favorite place. We paid $233 for a two-room suite (in retrospect I noticed that this is more expensive than the rate advertised on the web site). We were told when we booked in June that there was a two-night minimum. Yet Mango Moon was empty; the two other guests departed on our first day.
We chose it specifically because of the advertised "nature trail" to the "private beach," which was a complete joke. We are experienced hikers. This "nature trail" was a 20-minute steep downhill mud slide, not properly maintained nor marked and slippery and dangerous, particularly considering the number and variety of snakes that live in that area.
The pool was small and cold, with a deck expansion underway that left exposed & dangerous spikes of metal rebar next to the slippery surface of the tile deck. The caretaker was a morose expat who we usually found sitting at the bar or in front of the tv (constantly on) with the other staff. He was friendly enough but seemed terribly unhappy, complained constantly about the "Ticos" and was unable to provide us with suggestions for a place for dinner hospitable to small children.
The breakfast was quite good on the first morning. Unfortunately, on the second morning, we were served left-over sweet breads, fruit and pinto gallo (along with fresh pancakes). Very disappointing. The front room was small but with a great view. The second bedroom was smaller and dark; the bathroom was VERY small and dark. Loud disco music from La Mariposa up the hill kept us awake the first night.
Yes, the view from the deck is lovely (although not private as the rooms share the same deck), and monkeys crossing in front of the breakfast area are enchanting, but for $233 a night we found this to be a very poor choice for our family(in comparison, at Xandari for a similar rate we had our own villa, two heated pools, jacuzzi, many miles of well-maintained walking trails, a spa, a restaurant serving meals using organic ingredients, etc. etc.). At Si Como No, where we ended up eating most of our meals, we could have stayed for less money and enjoyed amenities similar to those at Xandari.
Mango Moon aspires to greatness but it's not there yet. Its negative-energy staff, a lack of amenities (hint to owners: a tv is not an amenity) and the falsely-advertised "trail" made it a negative experience for us. We would not recommend it to others.
Terrific Experience at the Mango Moon
We just spent three wonderful nights at El Mango Moon, an intimate bed and breakfast in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. We usually prefer the anonymity of a larger hotel, but this experience may have changed our mind for future vacations. The hotel itself is beautiful and we loved our room with a view of the bay and rainforest. Joanie, the owner, could not have been a more gracious, accommodating, and welcoming hostess. Her staff, Christiane and Carlos, treated us with warm hospitality, anticipating and responding to our every need and question with detailed information. We felt like we were staying at the home of friends. In fact, we enjoyed the place so much that we found ourselves relaxing on the terraces and enjoying the view rather than venturing out to the national park. When you go, get up early so you can enjoy the show the birds and monkeys put on every morning. Breakfast was delicious and happy hour made the sunset viewing very enjoyable. On the whole, this was a five star experience.
Loved Mango Moon!
The Mango Moon is a beautiful B and B overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.
The MM is owned by a fabulous and generous American couple, who went out of their way to take care of us when we were staying with them. They booked us on a fantastic catamaran tour when our other tour was cancelled. They gave us great restaurant recommendations, and took care of all of our transportation bookings while we were there. Fantastic service which is only eclipsed by the beautiful amenities...
The B and B- 13 beautiful, clean, and reasonably priced rooms- many with ocean views, small but refreshing pool, amazing breakfast prepared for you each morning (rice and beans, fresh fruits, eggs, french toast- amazing!) that you can eat in the breakfast room that is open-air and looks out onto the ocean.
I strongly recommend Mango Moon.
Hotel Snob Loved the Mango Moon
My husband, 2 kids (young) and I spent the week between Xmas and New Years at the Mango Moon. They were gracious enough to accomodate our younger kids (11 years and 8 years who have travelled a lot) because I was having a hard time booking rooms at the last minute. We had 2 rooms with an adjoining bathroom. The rooms were clean and well appointed with plenty of space for us and enough luggage for 20 of us. The food in Costa Rica was far better than I expected and the breakfast at the Mango Moon was no exception. I was concerned about the beach access after reading other reviews and it proved to be no problem. We walked down the road rather than the trail and got to a very large beach that we could walk down forever. We booked a canopy tour and a Manuel Antonio park tour through the hotel and both were great. The employees and the family that owns the Mango Moon were more than accomadating. Joni provided much needed hydrocordisone cream to my daughter for a bad rash and was able to locate a room for our last night at another great hotel in Manuel Antonio among other things. The monkeys are awesome and I have great pictures of Julian (the iguana) with both of the kids. The only complaint that I would have is that the geckos make some funky noises at night and I really don't think that can be helped. In fact, it made for a great "search for the gecko in the room" game. Thank goodness we never located it because I told my son that he could take it home if we did! All in all, if you are looking for an intimate hotel in Manuel Antonio (where everyone knows your name including the other guests who shared all of their tips), this is your place. Thank you Jeff and Joni, for I know you will read this, for an amazing introduction to Costa Rica. We will return!
Best Vacation Yet!
What a fabulous place to stay! We stayed at the Mango Moon Bed and breakfast for our anniversary. We had such a special time. The rooms were immaculate and beautifully decorated. Our suite faced the ocean and the view of the water, sunsets, and jungle were breath taking. We saw monkeys, toucans and flowers everyday just feet from where we sat on the balcony outside out room. Breakfast was delicious and the staff very gracious. The owners were on site and spent time with us finding out how to make our stay most enjoyable. They arranged for private body massages, gave tips on places to eat and places to visit. The nature trail to the beach below Mango Moon was lush and private. A great way to go on a nature hike without worry of where you were going or who you would meet. The beach was very wonderful. There was a beautiful pool and patio there at Mango Moon. Costa Rica is very friendly and laid back. We loved it so much we booked the entire B&B for our daughters wedding! Highly Recommended! Enjoy!
Monkeys, monkeys and more monkeys
My boyfriend and I just returned from our vacation in Costa Rica. While there we stayed at El Mango Moon for four nights. This B&B is a real quite get away. In the morning all the monkeys are out and hollaring. The breakfast was great! I enjoyed the variety of breakfast items from day to day. The staff there were very friendly/helpful with whatever request you may have had whether calling for a taxi, suggesting a restaurant to eat at or booking a tour (Liz and Jeff).
A few things I would change if possible, is the lack of sun in the pool area. Also maybe spray around the pool for the abundance of red colored beattles. The walk down/nature trail from the B&B to the beach is misleading in the pictures.
Overall the B&B is nice if you want a quite get away with no ammentities.
