The Pension Santa Elena was one of the most friendly places we stayed in Costa Rica. The staff were wonderful, diverse, knowledgeable, and seemed to truly enjoy interacting with travelers. We reserved a room with a private bath. They have dorm style rooms with shared baths available for the really budget travelers.
The Pension sits on a cobbled street across from a small cafe that also sells new/used books. The decor is colorful and eclectic. After lazing in the hammocks, my daughter and I are in search of our own perfect hammock for home. What a better way to relax? The staff are well worth the time to get to know and are easy to engage in conversation. We loved the wide variety of nationalities present, most of which were not from the US (home for us) and gave life a different perspective.
We will more definitely return and can't say enough. It felt like home after just a few days.
