Hidden away in "Los Anonos" in Escazu, is Big Mikes Guest House. Mike Forbes a Culinary Teaching Chef opened the doors in 1995. Arriving at the airport, I had a driver waiting for me, who brought me to this private gated neighborhood. Crested 200 feet above the Orinoco River, Big Mikes Guest House is a massive compound of great comfort. As a guest you have complete access to all common abd outside areas including Mikes giant Gourmet kitchen. There is a large living parlor with large leather chairs, sofas, a several libraries with cable tv. There are about 100 travel books on site too. There is a spacious dining area and several dining tables. The place is loaded with art, food and explorer regalia. There's a small service kitchen off the dining and rear patio with expresso, coffee machine, wine rack, and fridge full of beer! There is a laundry room for you to use too. Big Mikes Gourmet Kitchen, the size of a large garage is equipped for the Iron Chef. As a guest at Big Mikes you may use it. I walked to the market less than 10 minutes away and bought food supplies, and there's several refrigerators. Through the dining area and off the gourmet kitchen is the sprawling patio with numerous chairs, and tables, a 3 story Japanese style tree house with bedrooms on each level, and may be used as a meditation or reading room. At the area is a Jacuzzi and two metal doors open up for a breathtaking view of the Orinoco river below. All around are huge tropical trees, a canopy of green, flora and fauna. There are about 8 bedrooms, all are spacious. A maid is available to press clothes, do laundry. My room upstairs was large with a queen bed, lots of pillows, towels. I had closet, and space to put all my clothes. My window overlooked the trees, had a 20" cable TV, desk, free wireless. Computer available to use free. My private bath had a large shower with lots of hot water. I have never felt so much at home, and had so much space to myself. The place is also equipped as a Private Culinary Institute for those interested.
Great views, Laundry Service, Dry Cleaning, Professional Gourmet Kitchen use, multiple large common areas, extremely nice host, free wireless internet, fax, computer, spacious and lush rear patio, total privacy, very informative Snglish/Spanish speaking host, access to San Jose at your footsteps or by a short and inexpensive cab ride. Walking distance to fully stocked grocery, liquor, fresh food stores, high quality restaurants, bars, buses and malls. You can learn Culinary arts here at this location, and have a Spanish tutor give you a crash course in the language of Costa Rica. Friendly hostel was a very cheap and clean place to stay. It was outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown San Jose.
The hostel was closeby to many restaurants, stores, and ATMs.
The owner of the hostel, Miguel, was very nice and helpful. Tours can be arranged through Miguel.
The hostel also offers a great airport transfer service.
