Totem Hotel Beach Resort
Perfect Location, Great Suite, Wonderful Staff, De
We spent the first week in March, 2009 at Totem Hotel in Cocles, down the road from Puerto Viejo. Totem is great hotel, and exceeded our expectations. The location is perfect, and the 2nd floor suite is wonderful! We stayed in room #6, and it has air conditioning, even though we only used it at night a couple times when it got a little still, but I'm sure it would be needed when it gets really hot on the Carribean coast. The Playa Cocles beach is right out front -literally just across a narrow dirt road. We could hear the ocean waves crashing right outside our room! It was nice to be able to open the double doors to our room and sit on the balcony/terrace and have our coffee in the morning and watch the ocean waves, the birds in the trees around the property, and people walking, biking and driving down the road in the morning on their way to work. There is a small coffee maker in the room, along with a small fridge (I wish the coffee maker had been bigger -a little complaint!) An excellent market is a 10 minute walk south of the hotel, so we stocked up on extra coffee, milk, snacks, bottled water, beer and champagne! The suites on the 2nd floor are very private, so we could leave the doors open any time. The first floor suites are very nice, too, and their doors open to the pool area. I noticed that the 1st floor rooms had screens in the window, so you could let in the breeze, but the 2nd floor had windows with no screens (I did wish we had the option of screens to let in some air when we had the doors closed at night.) There are other rooms scattered around the lovely grounds, too. Our room had a comfortable large bed, and twin bunk beds. The staff cleaned our room every day, with fresh towels. A family from northern Italy owns the hotel, and they are very nice people. The young chef Nico is fantastic. He prepared fresh grilled tuna for me, which was simple and delicious! My husband ordered the home made farfalle pasta with vegetables and mozzerella cheese, and it was yummy! Breakfast is included, and there was always coffee, tea, juice, fresh bread, ham, cheese, fruits and various eggs, potatoes, etc. We took a local shuttle bus all the way down to Manzanillo and had fresh seafood at Maxi's -great! The most beautiful beaches are there, and also at Punta Uva. You can easily walk into town (Puerto Viejo) either on the road or the path by the beach from Hotel Totem. We heard a live band Sunday night at Bar Maritza, and danced the night away. The bartender called us a cab to bring us back to the hotel -I think it's better not to walk at night, it gets very dark. We didn't do any other tours there, but we will next time -we were relaxing the rest of our trip. Don't miss the pizza at La Terreza just south of Totem, we also had a great meal at Costa de Papito next door, and delicious fish tacos at Bar Paso in Puerto Viejo. We truly enjoyed our stay at Totem Hotel and would highly recommend it for a great vacation place!
