driving between countries in central america

by omax

has anyone driven between costa rica and panama? i will be in san jose for a couple of weeks on business and would like to drive down to the panama canal and back over the weekend. is this possible to do without encountering problems with immigration in either country? does anyone know the airlines that fly this route? i checked kayak and they came up with 600usd, which is way too much. thanks, omax

Finding a rental company that will let you take a car across the border could be difficult. The below flight is powered by kayak.

You could look into Tica Bus http://www.ticabus.com/ing_rutas_horarios_costa_rica.htm

Just realized that my flight info for you didn't go through. It is powered by Kayak and showed $375 on Taca Airlines. Below was another search. I just randomly picked dates.

There is no way you could go by land from San Jose CR to the Canal in one weekend. You would spend most of the weekend on a bus. You would need a minimum of 4 days. Your only option would be by plane.

I am not sure if you have every driven around in Costa Rica but the roads are terrible. It takes forever to get around because they are in such bad condition and it can be nerve racking. I am not sure about the condition in Panama. I thinkyou may find you would spend all of your time driving on that weekend trip. You might look into one of the small Costa Rica airlines to see if you can fly into Panama closer to your destination to save some time. I can't remember which one flies there. Check Sansa and Nature Air. One of them flys there.

Travel Tips for San José

Conquistador Statue

A reminder that Costa Rica was once a Spanish colony. The country was "discovered" in 1502 by Christopher Columbus on his fourth voyage to the New World. Unlike Guatemala and Mexico to the north, the area that is now Costa Rica was sparsely inhabited at the time. Spain governed Costa Rica as a colonial possession until 1823. Costa Rica gained independence from Spain at the same time as other Central American Spanish colonies. Independence was granted without war and without official bloodshed.

A dictionary with your language to Spanish

by Robin922

Take a dictionary with your language to Spanish. While the hotels and major tourist locations have people who speak English (and other languages), if you enjoy going where the locals go, you could run into a language problem. If you don’t take a dictionary, at least have a few key words written down.

If you forget to take it with you, you can always do what I did… draw little pictures on paper. Hay don’t laugh it worked. 2 eggs sunny side up, bacon, toast, juice and coffee ;-)

River Sarapiquí

by besbel

I would also recommend a tour by boat in river Sarapiquí, where you can observe some of the fauna of the place, like howler monkeys, crocodriles, caymans and toucans, among others. However, in order to preserve the calm of the place to not to disturb the animals, the tour is short and the most silent possible. There are several tour packages that includes this activitiy with the visit to the Poás volcano and the waterfalls, but if you prefer you can reach this place by bus or car.
There is also the possibility to do rafting in other areas of this river (see adventure sports tips).

orange cab...

by pollon

about cabs, there is only one company for the service FROM the airport to the town centre: the orange cabs, and the price is 10 US$ but no need to bargain, there is a kiosk where you pay for the trip this fixed amount and where they accept credit cards.
while from town TO the airport, any cab can offer you the service and then you can and had better to bargain ;-)...

sodas...

by pollon about soda Cheller

after I had just been materially pulled away from my proposal to enter a soda near the zone of the streetwalkers, I chose the soda Cheller in the avenida central.
Some curious look (with my so white skin - maximum I get honey colour or burnt when I get tanned - I don't appear exactly like a tico even if I have been nicknamed itala-tica :-) by a Costarican) and good local food in a real tico atmosphere.
But I don't seem to have caught the exactly right moment infact only afterwards I have read on a guide that here I should have tried a breakfast in the very early morning to real experience San José, it's open 24 hours.
