Nice apartment hotel
by suetown about Hotel Casa Conde
The hotel is a series of apartment-type buildings, two story, probably 8 units per floor. The grounds are nicely landscaped and the complex has gated access. I arrived by taxi and didn't venture forth, but the fact that the entry was gated suggests that it might not be in the best neighborhood. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit (queen bed in each room), with a living/dining area, kitchen and bath. Facilities are well-maintained. Staff is helpful, although not all speak English. Some units have washer/dryers. Units are air-conditioned, although in January there was no need for the a/c. There is a nice restaurant and small bar in the reception building. Meals are either a choice of a buffet or order off the menu. Much of the seating was outside around the pool. Buffet food was fine, better than one might expect from a buffet. It's about a half hour from the airport and they do have a shuttle service. We stayed here at the beginning and end of a trip around Costa Rica. It was nice to be able to spread out and relax before packing up the bags. Lots of tours seem to stay here, although individuals as well. Loved the murals on the exterior walls of the buildings.

Which Hostels are good in San Jose?
by koreantupac
I am not a young partier, just want somewhere easy to get a good night's sleep, clean and affordable. What are your experiences with hostels in San Jose. I wanna hear the good, bad and ugly.

I've got a good story. Nothing ugly. I stayed in a place called the natural hostel and the people were friendly and spoke fairly good english. No parties or wild events. Most bad and ugly stuff happens in the bars and casinos at night. I found this place using this sites search tool, I searched for hostel:

If you want to hear ugly stories I could tell you my experiences with people on the buses in costa rica. Guys telling me that they are with the "secret service of costa rica" and that I am too tall to be riding on the bus... but thats a different story. Never had any issues with the hostels I stayed at. Just talk to them beforehand and make sure they seem decent.
Travel Tips for San José
Fruitstands
by zrim
There are fruit kiosks all over the city. The selections did not seem exotic like a fruit vendor in Malaysia, but seemed to have the more "recognizable" fruits like apples, grapes and bananas.
Given the dangers of hepatitis and other such germ transmitted disease--I'd definitely wash any fruit bought on a street corner before ingesting.
Poás Volcano National Park
by besbel
This area is a must for two reasons:
- you can visit the crater of the Poás volcano (around 2700 m. over sea level) which is the second largest accesible crater in the world. The volcano is still active, but it is safe though, considering that its activity consists on, eventually, throw out steam and stone, but not lava.
My big frustration: the day I went to the Poás... it was cloudy!! That means that I could neither observe the turqoise lagoon in the crater nor take a picture of it :-( That's why I had to conform myself with the pic of the board of explanation of the crater, next to it.
- you can observe the rich flora and fauna of the national reserve, which conserves 79 types of exotic birds, as hummingbirds and quetzals, as well as other animals like coyotes and the green-yellow squirrell, this last one only found in this park. You could also enjoy the different types of forests that it conserves.
Avenida Central
by besbel about Avenida Central
In downtown San José you will find Avenida Central's nine blocks in a sort of promenade, where you will find anything, from restaurants, clothes' shops (including Payless Shoes Source, where I bought some sandals) pharmacies, internet cafes and, in general, all types of commercial activity. Go and take a look!
Billy Boy
by pollon about soda Billy Boy
in spite of its name, it's not a fast food but a soda, which means a local restaurant, and I advice it for a quick snack or calmer meal: there is a good choice of dishes and the chicken or meat with the unfailing arroz (rice)
