Travel Tips for San José

Like any city San Jose has its share of poverty

by zrim

San Jose is home to about 800,000 people and is the capital city of Costa Rica.

I generally have a good sense of direction, but I would advise against trying to navigate the streets of San Jose with your own vehicle. The central area is pretty much a grid system, but outside of centro the streets are twisty-turny and it is easy to get turned around. Additionally, it looked as though parking downtown would be a great big hassle. Sometimes it is best to fork over the money to the cabbies.

Grilled Houses

by penumbra

If you venture into a residential area, you’ll notice that all of the houses have metal security bars protecting their windows, doors and yards. Walls are often topped with razor wire and other sharp implements. All of this is in an effort to prevent break-in’s and theft. Apparently, even this is no longer enough as some enterprising burglars using fishing rods to snag items behind the bars through open windows. Just something you might want to consider if you are staying long term or considering buying a house.

Sarchi

by grets

Sarchi is Costa Rica's famous craft centre, best known for its painted ox carts. These carts are Moorish in origin and can be traced back to Spanish immigrants. Now you can find them adorning gardens of local inhabitants. You can also see them being made at a couple of cart factories.

If you would like to bring home one of the painted carts, but are worried about space in your luggage, the same painting style is also used to decorate wooden trays, plates and other souvenirs.

Many other crafts are for sale here including unpainted woodwork and leather rocking chairs.

Fun into the night.......

by happyhourkid about Key Largo

Later, after the live band had either finished their set or quit after getting sick of us, Key Largo had a DJ. Still, no microphone was safe. By this time, I don't know what we were saying. Mark has a go.......

Don Carlos for a simple meal

by easterntrekker about Don Carlos Restaurant

We liked this place for a casual lunch or dinner. It is in an old colonial building and has lots of travellers from everywhere stopping by. The service is great and it's inexpensive . $3.50 for a bowl of homemade soup and tasted sandwich! It's open all day. Love the homemade soup!!
