Laundromats
by Josilver
Most hotels have a laundry service, but it is generally expensive, I have thus far found 2 laundromats.
Sixahola launderia: located near the corner Avenida 2 and calle 9, they do you washing for you, it costs 1000 colones per kilo. I dropped mine off at 10:30 they said it will be done by 2pm, in Costa Rica time that meant 3pm, it cost 3000 colones
Central plaza self service laundromat: Located in the plaza de culturala, Avenida 2 calle 3, Cost: 2000 colones wash and dry, extra 200 warm water, 350 hot water, 200 for soap.
there is an internet cafe next door to fill in time while you wash.
addicted to soccer
by syphaxus
costa rican people are fascinated by soccer and that's why televisions mustn't miss in any household. the "seleccion tricolor" has participated the FIFA world championship in 2002 for the second time after 1990 and enthusiasm for this sport is growing steadily. talking to local people and teachers I found out that their success is probably the result of a governmental program: it doesn't matter how small a village you visit, you are very likely to encounter people playing soccer. usually the ground is not very good, but at least the government managed to take kids off the street to soccer places and reached another success: the streets in the cities got saver.
if you happen to get in touch with local people playing soccer, don't miss the opportunity and participate! watching the national soccer team playing football is also worth an experience.
Serpentarium
by grandmaR
We arrived about mid-day on Sunday, and by the time we got to the hotel and checked in, we didn't have much time left for sightseeing. We took a cab (expensive) into San Jose to the Serpentarium at 1st Ave., 9 & 11 Streets. I figured the chances of encountering a poisonous snake were small, but I wanted to know what one would look like if I did run across a snake.
This was a VERY interesting place, and I enjoyed it very much, but then I'm not freaked about snakes. The website says: "Most notorious is the terciopelo, responsible for more than half the poisonous snakebites in Costa Rica. The menagerie also features boa constrictors, Jesus Christ lizards, poison dart frogs, iguanas, and an aquarium full of deadly sea snakes. There are also such exotic creatures as king cobras and Burmese pythons."
According to my information at the time, the serpentarium is closed Monday, but it was one of the few things open on Sunday.
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00-18:00 / Sat-Sun 10:00-17:00
Admission: Approx. US$5, per person
watch batteries...
by pollon about a local shops gallery...
definitely cheaper are the watch batteries: here in italy they are normally expensive and I had with me such an old wrist watch that a new battery wouldn't have been worth so I thought to ask for its price, once found where (in CR you buy them in jewelry shops) and it was incredibly cheap...
In the pic the Templo de Música in the Parque Morózan.
Over-hyped
by aliang9 about Machu Picchu
The food was good, but I think it is over-hyped. Maybe it was the dishes we ordered. The steak in wine sauce and the stir fried pasta was very mediocre. The appetizer,(ceviche on the rocks and the fish soup) were very good. Fish soup
