Gran Hotel Costa Rica.
Sometimes they offer interesting discount rates. It was probably the best place in town since it's opening in the 1930-ies. A distinct 'Old World' charm. The perfect contrast to the Toruma hostel (I did both on the same trip)

The Gran Hotel is located in the heart of downtown San Jose. Built in 1930, it is one the Costa Rica's most historic accommodations. In fact, it is the only hotel to in the entire nation to be named a Historical and Architectural Landmark. The five story hotel sits facing the Plaza de la Cultura and across the street from the National Theater.
The entire Gran Hotel is designated as a "non-smoking facility. Amenities include free parking, laundry facilities, fitness equipment, and airport transportation (surcharge). The hotel also offers conference and meeting rooms, a business center and wireless Internet access in public areas.
We had booked the hotel for 3 nights via Orbitz. It stated each room was air conditioned. When we were taken to our room, it was not airconditioned. We called the desk and they said none of the rooms were airconditioned. Our first room was also one floor above the casino on the ground level, and looked out over the Plaza. It was too noisy to sleep. We were given a second room, on the back street. There was a guitar player playing there, collecting tips, until 2 AM. The next morning we cheked out and went to the Best Western hirise hotel nearby. It was the same price but air conditioned and not noisy. And they had a casino.
We stayed here the night before we headed back to Canada. A very nice hotel. Spotless, clean rooms, nice views of ciy. Casino, coffee shop, restaurant on bottom floor. Approx. $80 CAN per night. Right downtown so great location. This photo shows the view from our room.
The Gran Hotel is the oldest hotel in Costa Rica and is almost considered a national treasure. The hotel is centrally located on the Plaza de Cultura, next to the national Theater. It was completely renovated last year (paint, furniture, lobby). They are trying to restore its original grandeur. It was very charming and more importantly very clean. It had a good restaurant with free American breakfast included. They even had a young pianist who played during dinner. The staff was very friendly. Oh, did I mention that the price was right, $42 a night. My room was very small, the bed was very “firm.” and I was located overlooking the Cultural Plaza, which was entertaining but very noisy. You might prefer to ask for a more quiet side of the hotel. I would certainly stay there again.
Unique Quality: Good central location near tourist sights
Good view of Plaza de Cultura from window
Excellent computer center for guests (6 new computers)
Very good hotel gym
During the Dec. the cost might be 55 USD for double room/ night.
Under the rooms, in the salon there is casino for those guests.
Actually it might have noise night & lots of people to visit there.
Up to your decision.
Unique Quality: Great View to National Theater in CR & Plaza.
Good & delicious Breakfast.
Private Bath.
Nice Bed for night!
Air conditioning.

I thought that this would offer the elegance that I rarely travel in. From the outside it looks like a jewel but you cannot book a room by its cover. The rooms were not very well maintained and dark. Furthermore the noise from the street kept me up all night long. I just had experienced an uncomfortable bus ride across Costa Rica so I was in a foul mood. This hotel did not help. The hotel has a casino on site but I rarely gamble so that was not a thrill for me. There is a nice patio cafe where you watch the people go by and have a beer. The rooms have cable TV. Also on the plus side is the location from the National Theatre and the Gold Museum.
We have been visiting the gran hotel off and on for the past three years. we enjoy the place as a whole, however, in the past month things have changed. breakfast that once cost $4.20 has now jumped to $8.00 along with all other items on the menu. Cigarettes that are around $1.00 have gone to $3.00 and they have taken all of the game tables out of the casino. Unlike can or the u.s. you could play blackjack for a dollar and have some fun. Now it is just slot machines. Now we are very unhappy with the place we either stayed at once a week or visited weekly. It is still worth staying there as the room rates are still the same.

The Gran Hotel San Jose
I'VE WORKED OUT MY ITINERARY.
SAN JOSE -> IRAZU -> POAS -> LA FORTUNA? -> ARENAL -> MONTEVERDE -> JACO -> MANUEL ANTONIO NATIONAL PARK -> BACK TO SAN JOSE?
bookmark (for a 2008 visit)
How is your budget?
You can visit Poas by public bus out of Alajuela (ask locally)
For Irazu
IRAZU VOLCANO (express bus from San José) - DEP. Sat. and Sun. from A.2,C.1/3 opposite Gran Hotel Costa Rica at 8:00; RET. 12:15; 54 km; 1:30 hrs. You can also take this bus at Cartago ruins at 8:30.
Most people pay money for the tour -check with your hotel for tours.
La Fortuna - Public bus out of San Jose or Alajuela for a few bucks or private shuttles for about $25-30. Private shuttles are Monteverdeinfo.com or Interbus.com
monteverde from la Fortuna Would recommend the Jeep/Boat/Jeep. About $25 takes about 3 hrs vs the public bus that takes forever on horrible roads and requires a change in the middle of nowhere.
Monteverde to Jaco. You could take the early morning (6am) bus to Puntarenas and then taxi or bus to Jaco. You could also do one of the private shuttles.
Manuel Antonio- Day trip or stay? Either way you could take a public bus inexpensively or hire a taxi.
I would always check locally for current bus schedules.
COOL, NICE ONE.
ANY INFO IS GOOD INFO FOR ME.
