There are some good restaurants and hotels, but not very much by the way of museums or art galleries. There is The National Museum, located in an old military fortress between Ave. Central and Ave. Segunda. You must also visit the National Theatre, which is probably the most beautiful building in the whole country. Some of the friendliest people in Latin America. The previous picture is of Parque Morazan and the 'Metal Building'. On the background is the Holiday Inn Hotel, with a casino on the top floor. I must confess, I had some luck there, and won some 'colones'! The picture below is of a shopping center south of the city. Very chic!
Lottery, Chances, Tiempos
by penumbra
You’ll see (and hear) street vendors downtown with lottery tickets pinned to their wooden tables. Lotería nacional (national lottery) tickets cost c2,500 with a chance to win c40 million on Sunday nights. Chances and Tiempos are sold for c1,000 and have a top prize of c10 million on Tuesday and Friday nights. Foreigners and tourists are allowed to play. Funds from the lotteries are used by Junta de Proteccion Social (JPS) de San Jose for its social program.

The best way to travel around...

The best way to travel around Costa Rica is definitely by bus. It's also pretty cheap which is a good thing for backpackers.
Since tourism tributes to Costa Rica's national income, it is quite easy to get around.
Do NOT rent any bikes of motors beause the roads are extremely bad. When we were in Costa Rica we saw lot of accidents. The bus takes quite a long time to get somewhere, but you will, ALIVE.

These are some of my favorite restaurants in San Jose:
1) Any reasonably priced soda.
2) Cafe Mundo (front entrance shown in the picture below)
A nice, quiet place for a relaxing lunch and dinner.
tel. 222-6190
200 m east of the INS parking,
Avenida 9 / Calle 15
Barrio Amon, San Jose
3) News Cafe - Hotel Presidente Restaurant
Decent breakfast buffet, located between 7th and 9th streets on Central Avenue. Their website is: http://www.hotel-presidente.com/ingles/cafe.html
4) Balcon de Europa Restaurant
The food is average but the decor of this place is excellent. The wood floor is made of a tree that is now on the endangered species list and the walls are adorned with historic photographs of Costa Rica. This place is located on 9th street about 25 meters north of Avenida Central. Whenever I go to Costa Rica I eat 'ceviche' and 'gallo pinto'. Next time I visit I'm taking a jar of jalape~o peppers and a bottle of Tapatio salsa to add some Mexican flavor to these dishes!
