Okay location but not a very nice place to stay

I stayed at this hotel March 2006 for 4 days. It does have a good location as it is in downtown San Jose with a Casino right across the street. However, right behind the hotel is the very "bad" section of town. One of the people with us had someone attempt to steal her purse while in a store shopping and a guy that was with us, on a seperate occasion had someone pull a knife on him.
The hotel was very worn looking and seemed very out of date.
The first room that we received did not have a door that would open, after making a 3 hour drive from our previous destination we wanted in our room to rest. The person at the front desk told us to go wait and someone would be with us in a few minutes. After about 30 minutes we went back to the front desk and was assured someone would be along shortly, so finally another hour later our door was unlocked for us. Apparently the maintenence person broke the lock because at that point the door would no longer lock. The staff told us they didnt have anymore rooms and we would have to keep that one anyway.
We did not want to stay in a hotel that had a door that would not lock! Much less go anywhere because we had to keep an eye on our stuff.
FINALLY our leader of the Study Abroad program convinced them to give us a different room. The door worked fine but we had a window that would not shut all the way.
The hot water did not work either so we had to take cold showers.
I would defintly advice staying somewhere else!

Hotel in San Jose

by maider

Hello,
I am staying two nights in San Jose before exploring the rest of the country. Any suggestion for a nice budget hotel/hostel?
Thanks

I stayed at the Ambassador. It wasn't too bad but it wasn't all that exciting.
For a budget check out the Gran Hotel.

Hey, thanks for your answer
Do you know perhaps the Bienvenido Hotel?
And what about the Coca-Cola area. Iheard so many things about that area, but most of the budget hotel and bus stations are around that area. Is it really dangerous?
See you
Maider

Hello Maider,
I was in San Jose last year in May. I stayed at the Hotel Balmoral, which is right downtown. Nice hotel with air conditioning. Very safe. The price was about U.S. $30 a night. You can check their web site at:

I hope this helps

On my first trip to CR I stayed at Bienvenido, what a dump. If you like an upscale hostel with dorm and private rooms check out Costa Rica Backpackers, don't let the cabies tell you any bull about the place, everyone who drives a cab in San Jose has a buddy with a "great" place. If I am wrong about backpackers, come see me in Puerto Viejo, Restaurant Marley and I'll buy you a drink!

Hi,

I think I read your email to late. I was in Bienvenido, and I agree with you. It was not a nice way to start our holidays. About San Jose, with half day you have seen it.
We were in Puerto Viejo (just passing by). It is a pitty we did not read the email before.
See you
Maider
