attack of the green men
by arasnosliw
Go figure....
This statue of green people is located outside of a very large and popular bank in SJ. There were several security guards surrounding the premises, dressed in green, looking rather similar to these statue people. Can you imagine what happened when I stopped for a second in front of the bank and ruffled through my bag to find my camera? The guards are startled and start to lift up their large guns. They looked kind of like AK-47s but I would't really know. One even preceded to point it at me and wander closer.
Traaaaaanquilo boys! It's merely a camera. I'm not going to go shoot up or bomb down your bank! Needless to say I scurried to take this shot and run far, far away.

The culture of Costa Rica can be summed up by their famous saying, 'Pura Vida', which is literally translated as 'Pure Life' in English. It's said by young and old alike. It's used as a response to '¿Como estas?' and means just living man, enjoying being alive, etc.
A second insight into the culture is that Costa Rica is going on 50 years of not having an army. They call themselves to be the Switzerland of Central America.
Lastly, as vistors will soon notice by the complexion of the populace, 95% of Costa Ricans are of pure Spanish blood very little mixing was done with the indigenous peoples for whatever reason.
Lankester Gardens
by grets
This is an orchid garden run by the University of Costa Rica. Originally a private garden run by a British orchid enthusiast, it is now open to the public.
Between February and April is the best time to visit the gardens to see most orchids in bloom.
There are over 800 species of orchids in these gardens, as well as many other plants and an arboretum
Airport

Nice enough airport. Arrivals is nice, bank services, quick customs etc.
Going home, we had a long wait. You must pay departure tax ($26) then join very badly organised que systems. Get here early, there are plenty of bars and shops once you get through security.
A taxi to downtown is $12. The meter seems to be rising very quickly, but that is only becasue it goes up in 1 pence intervals.
There is a cheaper bus service, but unless you are on a very tight budget, just get a taxi as the city isn't easy to navigate until you get your bearings.
