Logistical help from plane to bus in San Jose

by bndiskin

We are arriving in San Jose at the Pavas airport on a Nature Air flight from Nosara at 11:30 am on January 9. We would like to get a Mepe bus to Puerto Viejo from the Terminal Gran Caribe mid-afternoon. How much time should we allow between these two parts of our trip? We would like to take the earliest bus possible because it is a long trip. I've heard the buses often sell out, especially on a weekend. Is it possible to arrange for a taxi driver to purchase our bus tickets in advance and then meet us at the Pavas airport to take us to the bus terminal?

I's never a good idea to have a taxi driver get your bus tickets for you. I would suggest if you have arrangements at a hotel in the Caribbean area, they may be kind enough to arrange the bus ticket for you in advance and have it waiting for you at the bus station. Otherwise I would allow about an hour to be safe between the Pavas air strip and the CaribeNo bus terminal.

Be aware that January is a heavy travel month in Costa Rica, many locals are also traveling to the coast (kids are out of school) so it may be tough to get a seat on the bus. You may want to have a contingency plan just in case the bus is full (possible over-nighter in San Jose). Hope this helps.

Pavas airport is a bit out of town so a taxi will be expensive. the bus will take you downtown and you can take a short taxi from there to the Gran Caribe terminal no problem. make sure they use a meter (la Maria); don't negotiate a price. they will always set it higher than what the meter will tell you.

Travel Tips for San José

In San Jose, the capital of...

by bonmse

In San Jose, the capital of Tiquicia, you can base yourself for the following things:

1) use it as a base to tour the Natural wonders (volcanoes, rainforests, beaches) of this beautiful country

2) spend a couple of days visiting the cultural sights (theater, museums, restaurants) the city has to offer. this is a picture of the water fountain on Avenida Central next to the Plaza de La Cultura.

do not walk in this area once it's dark and people have gone home, it's not safe!

I saw this several times walking around San Jose and finally got the courage to take a picture, albeit when his back was turned. No need for machines when a willing arm with a machete is available. Just don’t upset the gardener.

Estación del Atlantico – Atlantic Train Station

by penumbra

This train station was the jumping off point for the “jungle train” which connected San Jose to Moin harbor near the town of Limón. Service has been discontinued in 1991 when an earthquake destroyed more than 50 miles (80 km.) of track on the Atlantic slopes. Currently, the 1908 Victorian-style building houses the National Train Museum which contains pictures and documents from that era. Outside there is a steam engine of the Northern Railway (as the line was called before nationalization) that was brought from Philadelphia in 1939. Open 10 am to 3 pm. Small admission.

Public Busses throughout Costa Rica

by BPR

The roads through the mountains are scary as hell. The bus drivers seem to place no value on human life. I would still recommend using public transportation over renting a car because the roads are very different. The drivers all have the roads memorized, if you're behind the wheel, you may end up driving around a sharp corner, to find that the road has become a one lane bridge with a bus coming right at you.

Vegetarian & Vegan Eats

by UneBanane about Vishnu

Vishnu is a vegetarian/vegan fast food restaurant. It was the first one I've know about in the world. I'm usually not all that impressed by faux meats and soy but, this place is awesome! I travelled with 2 vegetarians and a vegan so, I ate here alot. They have your typical fast food dishes (burgers, fries and pizza). Combo uno sin tomate & pina con agua.
