These are a couple of...
These are a couple of recommendations for San Jose Centro:
1) La Amistad Inn (http://centralamerica.com/cr/hotel/amistad.htm)
This Bed & Breakfast is located in Barrio Amon, north of Parque Morazan, close to the Zoo and to other fine B&Bs & restaurants. Room rates are from $30-$40 and include breakfast.
2) Ara Macao Inn (http://www.hotels.co.cr/aramacao.html)
Located in Barrio California, half-way between San Pedro Mall and San Jose Centro. On a small, quiet street. Room rates are around $40. Nice rooms, breakfast is only toast, fruit, juice and coffee.

If you are in downtown avoid going to search a place on the side south or near 8 or 12 street, that's a very dangeorus zone, a great place to stay is the zone east, near of university of costa rica, there lots of bed and breakfast so I guess prices are competitives.
The rest the same as any place at the world if you show it all…..you're fu*****, so carry only first hand stuff, good luck

Calle 19, Avs....
Calle 19, Avs. 11 & 13, 200 m. norte
200 m. oeste y 25 m. sur de la Iglesia Sta. Teresita
Downtown San Jose
SINGLE: USD $18 per night with shared bath, USD $24 per night with private bath
DOUBLE: USD $21 per night with shared bath, USD $30 per night with private bath
A GOOD MAP OF SAN JOSE IS AVAILABLE AT THIS HOTEL! This may seem like a strange criterion for a hotel, but for some reason I was unable to buy a good, detailed street map of San Jose anywhere else. Also, the reverse side of the hotel's San Jose map has a good map of all of Costa Rica.

I would recommend the Bed and...
I would recommend the Bed and Breakfast Hotel California. The owner, Bruce Cohen, is a great host and a new friend of mine. The hotel is located in Escazu minutes outside the captial San Jose. Hot water and a great breakfast are the norm and always help if you need it.
for one night it will cost about $20-$40 a night(depending on the size of the room)
Hotel California has one of the best views of San Jose at night and Bruce is very helpful.....he's orginally from Philly but he's lived there for 18 years.
