If you're a backpacker or budget traveler just looking for a bed to sleep on and a bathroom to shower in, then this hostel will suffice. The place is very drab and by American standards somewhat slummy in appearances, but it does offer several perks.... 1.) cheap rooms - my private room cost only $20 a night; 2.) a central location within walking distance of all the downtown historical landmarks and shopping opportunities; 3.) a very helpful and accommodating hostess/staff; 4.) free continental breakfasts consisting of coffee, fruit juices, sliced fruits, bread and jam; 5.) and free fast speed internet 24/7.

My room was very sparse, containing only the bed, a shelving unit, and a desk lamp. It happened to be facing a main street, so it got pretty loud during the morning commute. Also, be forwarned of not so warm showers and itchy bedsheets (so bring a bedsheet of your own or use your sleeping bag).

Right In The Heart Of The Action!

I was at a hotel around the same general area, but decided to change settings as I really do not like the impersonal hotel atmosphere. I checked the web for Bed & Breakfasts around the center of the city because I wanted to be around the Gran Hotel area. I wanted a place that is walking distance to everything in downtown and suitably found "Pension de la Cuesta." They have a well-maintained website and I thought to try it.

Pension de la Cuesta is in an ideal location because it is right in the heart of all the action. It is in a historically bohemian area of San Jose where artists reside. Although branded as a Bed & Breakfast, it is really more of a hostel type set-up. Bedrooms have dorm-style bunk beds, but there are also few private bedrooms available. It has a communal dining/living room as well as a courtyard. This place allows you to mingle with the other visitors/tourists & guests if you're up to it. In the website, you will find a colorful picture of the house, but the reality is that the paint has chipped off and somewhat faded. This was back in early December 2006, and I hope that since then they have re-painted it as it gives the house a more charming appeal.

The owners were really wonderful & they are the hands-on type. They help you with travel information/itinerary/tours and give you insight about the country. I had once been duped by a taxi driver while going out & about in town and the owners were protective. They ensured my safety all throughout my brief stay in CR and the owner himself drove me back to the airport early in the morning at the day of my departure. What a wonderful guy he is!

If you want a private bedroom, I suggest to book well in advance as the few they have easily gets booked and give them proper confirmation (they are pretty good with their e-mail responses). I went in thinking that I had booked a bedroom, but I found myself placed in a dorm-style room with proper warning though (I ended up being the only guest in that dorm-style bedroom). This happened with good reason because I came very late for check-in after a long full-day excursion & late check-out from the Gran Hotel. They thought I will no longer show up.

As they say, location, location, location!!! This place has a perfect location as well as provides top-notch & personalized services, warmth, hospitality, and an unbeatable price.

Good luck & enjoy beautiful Costa Rica!

Unique Quality: Perfect location--walking-distance to everything in downtown San Jose--and warm/personalized services!

Decent cheap Accomodation in downtown San Jose

I would really recommend this hotel because it is right at the center of the city, it is safe, and the staff is very friendly and helpful, providing a personal atmosphere.
My room was pretty simple but clean, and compared to many other hotels in San José it offers very reasonable prices for the rooms. The bathrooms were also clean, and the breakfast was simple but sufficient according to the price.

Unique Quality: Very good location
Cheap
Nice staff
Wi-Fi and internet access for free
Very good travel information

where to stay in San Jose

Where is a safe, clean and yet inexpensive place to stay in San Jose for a week or so for one person???

Whatever you do, do not stay at Pension de la Cuesta. Although, it is comfortable, it is run by extremely dishonest people. Myself and 5 others stayed there and got our bags stolen by the employees at the pension. Stay anwhere but there. I didn't find San Jose an extremely nice place to visit. One or two days is all you need. If that

I would look on www.isls.com an see if they have any suggestions for you. Also, I would suggest Turrialba--I know they have a school there that teaches English.

You might check out La Amistad or Hemingway Inn. They are real close to each other and you can stay for about 35 bucks a night and they are walking distance to the downtown walking mall.
