3 and a half days in CR - stay in San Jose?
by Sarichka
Hi - We arrive in San Jose on a Thursday afternoon and leave the following Monday. Anyone have suggestions on whether we should book lodging in SJ & just do day trips, or are things close enough where we should get out of the city for a night or two (or the whole trip!)? Thanks!

San Jose is quite congested. It's a very old city with lots of one-way streets which didn't keep up with expansion. Downtown attractions would occupy one day maybe. you could go to either Irazu or Poas as a day trip, but the other most visited places (like beaches, Arenal, etc) would be easier to see while staying nearby.

Of course, you can do something.
My advice contact a tour agency (costagaltraveltours@gmail.com, example) and explain your preferences. Central Valley have a lot of point of interest. And all of them are nearly 25 miles arround. Do you like a museum? Do you like a place with differents styles gardens? Do you like to visit a coffee plantation? Do you like visit a butterflies farm? Near San Jose you can visit two volcanoes. I recomend to visit also a river near Cartago. The next Mundial Championship of Rafting will be there. It could be better if you give us some clues about your interests. Costa Rica can give you a lot of experiencies. Pura vida.

Thanks! We decided to stay in Orosi for our visit - seems like a great base for hiking, volcanoes, etc.
Travel Tips for San José
the little things in life
by arasnosliw
Something that always struck me about Costa Rica was the little, minute difference in things that would never cease to amaze me. Things that you take for granted in normal life – a pea pod like this in the photo for example. To me, pea pods and peas are green. Here in Costa Rica however, there are these red pods with black peas (or beans) inside. I am not quite sure if it is really a pea pod, but it is something out of the ordinary. This is the case with everything. Bananas will be pink, monkeys will be purple (okay, maybe not that extreme), and insects will be 20 times the size you imagine them to be. Magnificent creatures you’ve never encountered will lurk at every corner. Sometimes you feel like you’re in a story book or surrealistic fantasy world.
San Jose has tons of small...
by TempNomad
San Jose has tons of small museums...most are within 50 cents to three dollars for entrance.
The Fidel Tristan Jade Museum re-opened three days before I left...or thereabouts. It's beautiful. It's located on the 11th floor of the National Insurance Institute in downtown San Jose. It's open during the week. It has loads of beautiful jade (of course!) and also has a sizeable collection of ceramics. An extensive fertility collection, if I remember correctly.
I also really liked the Gold Museum, and El Teatro Nacional. San Jose has an incredible amount of dramatic, dance, film, and art productions. It has more independent theatres than any other city I've seen. And I live in NYC!
Braulio Carrillo National Park
by besbel
The Braulio Carrillo reserve, outside San José, is in most parts unexplored. If going with a tour guide, you can reach just a little extension of the park and will be offered the oportunity to take pics in just one spot :-(. If you go by trail, however, the hike is really worth it! The park contains more than 6000 types of plants and 333 species of birds. You can visit the reserve either by road or by plane.
Live music every night
by Kindra about Jazz Cafe
This big, classy jazz joint is located on the main road in San Pedro a few blocks east of Calle de la Amargura. Cover charge is 2000 colones and live music varies greatly from new age to jazz to rock. Famous Tico band Mal Pais often makes appearances here.
Veggie food in San Pedro
by Tom_In_Madison about Comida para Sentir
Had the plate of the day, which was Meatless Paella. It resembled the typical Costa Rican plate of beans and rice to a great degree. It came with potato salad and a salad with a lot of sprouts on it. Has vegetarian food, catering to the local student clientele. Has good bakery in the window. Food was so-so.
