Nightlife & Lodging

by DLMelvin86

Where is the best nightlife in San Jose and what are some good moderately priced hotels or hostels that are close to the action?

Consider Hostel Bekuo. http://www.hostelbekuo.com/#60RVpfhoudRL. It is located on a quiet street, but walking distance to plenty of night life. It is clean and the staff is really friendly and can help you figure out the best places to go.

Travel Tips for San José

Stone Spheres

by Stephen-KarenConn

One of the most interesting things we saw in Costa Rica were the stone spheres. About 300 of these mysterious polished orbs have been discovered in Costa Rica beginning in the 1930s, however they are believed to have been carved between 200 BC and 1600 AD. Several examples of The stone spheres are on display at the National Museum.

The spheres come in all sizes, from a few centimeters to more than two meters in diameter. The largest weigh as much as 16 tons. Many different theories abound as to whether the stone balls are man-made or a natural phenomenon. It is the mystery or their origin that that I found most intriguing.

Even if it's hot, nobody wears shorts in the city.

by BPR

If you want to scream tourist, wear shorts. But, be forewarned that thieves can spot a tourist a mile away. Your best bet is to wear clothes that don't make you stand out. San Jose is wonderful, but don't set yourself up to be robbed.

Calle 17 Pedestrian Mall

by penumbra

I was always encanted with the short pedestrian mall on Calle 17 that connects the National Park with the Organismo de Investigación Judicial, Court Administration buildings. There are few is any street vendors, palm trees line the street and interesting architecture lies to either side. Along the way, stop off at the Legislative Assembly (Avenida Central), the National Museum (Avenidas Central-2) and the Criminology Museum (Avenidas 6-8).

Good bocas and happy hour in San Pedro

by Kindra about Bar Vyrus

This is a fun little spot to catch a sports game while looking at the street below, munching on some bocas and having some happy hour beers. (2 for 1000 colones before 7 pm)

The second floor balcony offers bar stools under a thatched palm roof. Casual.

Rostipollos

by besbel about Rostipollos

Chain of Costa Rican restaurants where you can try roasted chicken with either salads or several typical Central American complements like:
- patacones (fried smashed bananas)
- dados de queso (cheese squares)
- tortillas de maíz (corn pancakes)
- fajitas
- elotes (baked corn)
- frijolitos molidos (smashed red beans)
There are also a selection of desserts. As for the service, it is cool and the prices are reasonable, a good meal with drink and dessert went around US$6-10 per person.
There are 11 restaurants all over the city:
- Alajuela (next to Hampton Inn Hotel)
- Curridabat (next to Plaza del Sol)
- Desamparados (in Desamparados mall)
- Escazú (in Trejos Montealegre)
- Guadalupe (in front of Liceo Napoleón Quesada)
- Heredia (north of National University)
- Mall San Pedro (food court)
- Multiplaza Mall (food court)
- San José (next to Variedades Cinema)
- San Pedro (in Calle Real Mall)
- Santa Ana (El Paseo Mall) The dessert "tres leches" (three milks), which is a cake made of condensated milk, evaporated milk and cream of milk. I loved it because not only am I fond of sweets and desserts, but it also brings me back memories of the conversations with my pals, around this cake and a cup of coffee.
