Club Amigo Marea Del Portillo: A quiet hotel in a natural setting
If you are looking for a party, this is not your hotel of choice. This is a lovely, but quiet hotel, in an isolated but very natural part of Cuba. It shares facilities with the sister-hotel next door, the slightly more elegant Farallon. The rooms, grounds and pool are all very adequate, clean and comfortable, and the food is fine - nothing less than the many other hotels I have experienced in Cuba. The beach is not white sand, except for the island you can go it on a special excursion for a small fee. But, being on the south shore, the weather is much more reliable thatn the north shore of Cuba.
Unique Quality: What makes this hotel special is the service, the view and the natural activities close by. From here are wonderful walks and bike rides, visits to the local villages, horseback riding and jeep safaris in the mountains, scuba diving and deep sea fishing for baracuda.
For the more adventurous, there are some fascinating places to go in a rented car, including the cities of Santiago and Manzanillo, national parks for hikes, caves, & bird watching etc . and trekking which includes the trail up the highest mountain, Pico Turquino.
More locally are several marked hiking trails with wonderful views of the mountains and the sea and plenty of cacti. (See my off-the -beaten-track tips)
