Considering a trip with kids

by moogaroon

Hello VT - My Dad and my sister are interested in taking a trip to Havana to see the city and here some music, etc. My husband and I and our 2 kids (3 and 5) would like to go as well, but with some famly friendly goals in mind (quiet place to stay, not too much walking, fun for kids). My question is whether it is possible to have a "young" family friendly vacation in Havana? If possible, we would like to rent an apartment, spend some time seeing the city, eat some great meals and make some trips to beaches. We are planning this trip for December 2010.
Any suggestions or advice?

As long as you are not from the USA, (Although there is a way to do it by taking a detour to Canada........), - yes you can have a family friendly vaccation in Cuba.

It has been a while for me, so will not elaborate, as I expect others to chime in with more updated information. (if not, I can come back).

In the meantime, take a look at the Cuba pages here on VT, They are chock full of all kinds of information for you.

Yours sounds like a doable plan. There are licensed private apartments that can be rented (re: although owner of it would have to stay at home). Average rental apartment (re: known as “casas particulars”) would have a/c bedrooms and built-in bathrooms. They charge per room nightly (with or without breakfasts). Rates vary depending upon quality and mostly location.

Travel Tips for Havana

Climate

by Santini738

Havana, like much of Cuba, enjoys a pleasant year-round tropical climate that is tempered by the island's position in the belt of the trade winds and by the warm offshore currents. Average temperatures range from 72 °F (22 °C) in January and February to 82 °F (28 °C) in August. The temperature seldom drops below 50 °F (10 °C). The lowest temperature was 33 °F(2.0 °C) in Santiago de las Vegas, Boyeros. The lowest recorded temperatures in Cuba are 32 °F(0,6 °C)in Bainoa, Havana province. Rainfall is heaviest in October and lightest from February through April, averaging 46 inches (1,167 millimetres) annually. Hurricanes occasionally strike the island, but they ordinarily hit the south coast, and damage in Havana is normally less than elsewhere in the country.

Old cars

Havana is one of the few places you can go in the Western Hemisphere that hasn't been influenced heavily by North American culture. Ever since Kennedy but trade restrictions in place, Cuba has had very few imports. This is very evident just be looking at all the cars people drive. Seeing all the old chevs driving around!

You must take a tour of the city of Havana.
You must visit the city near the harbour, where the cathedral is located. Very beautiful old buildings, but most need restoring.
The Christopher Columbus cemetary is also a place to be seen, very impressive.
Do not get caught in going to the Copacabana night club. It might have been something 50 years ago but the shows now are kind of amateurish. The setting however is beautiful. The plaza around the cathedral with all the nice old buildings.

See the buildings

See the buildings and the old cars. Spanish colonial times gave one legacy and the American colonial times gave the other.
The cars are fabulous and quite rare in the world today. It's next to impossible to buy one as a foreigner and take it home, such a shame!

Old Man in Havana

by photopilot

I met and photographed this old Cuban man in Havana Vieja (Old Havana) and he was featured in the book "Millennium Photo Project - Dawn of the 21st Century". This book celebrated the 24 hour period from 12 noon on December 31, 1999 to 12 noon on january 1, 2000. This man celebrated the new millennium by quietly sitting and smoking his pipe and thinking of the years gone by.

But please remember when you photograph locals to ask "el permiso por favor" before you take the photos. Always remember that these are people, and not zoo animals. Think of their feelings before you stick a camera in someone's face. My fondest memory of this man was returning to Havana one year later, walking the streets of Old Havana until I found him again, and presenting him with a copy of the published book. I will always remember the human contact between a Canadian photographer and an old Cuban man. Gracias mi amigo.
