excellent hotel in historic centre of havana

would highly reccommend this hotel, excellent location very close to all the historical parts of havana. Also close to centro havana. very clean, towels changed daily. excellent air con, with individual room controls. a large choice of places to eat nearby, mostly serving roast pork or chicken-the norm in Cuba! All the reception staff speak good english too. Would advise guests to be down for breakfast aboutg 45 minutes before it finishes as when it's gone it's gone!!
Slightly noisy in rooms at front of hotel but nothing a set of earplugs wouldn't resolve! This should not put anyone off this hotel we would happily stay here again, spent ten nights there in March 2007. If in Cuba in March or October ask if they are changing the time, no-one told us about the time change which was a bit confusing! Some years they change it, other years they don't!!!

Unique Quality: Daisy the tour rep at the hotel very helpful, good range of tours on offer. Check prices of taxi to airport with tour rep, much cheaper booking with them than ordering through hotel.
Cash exchange rates poor at the hotel, much better rate at Cadeza, there is one about 5 mins from hotel in historic centre, tour rep has leaflets with useful information like this in it.

Near Cathedral a quiet place to stay

U?ll be able to find an authentic house of colonial guest. Paintings that show the eclectic Havana, singular ceramic pieces or travelers transformed into copper statues, tinge the decoration of this Inn. Its roomy and illuminated lobby interprets the captivating room of an elegant Havana large house of the XVIII and XIX centuries. The nearby Cathedral offers a great view

It counts, also, with two interior patios: The Arcade and The Yagruma, the first sample a reminiscent mural of the arches of facades and galleries of the ancient city; and the second it is dedicated to the serenity and the view, both are sample of the good pleasure and of the desire of covering you to dinner in family.

Great hotel in Habana Viejo

This is great hotel about 100 meters from the Catedral de San Cristobel. Also nearby is the Plaza de Armas. Hotel is in the Spanish colonial style with open air courtyards surrounded by the rooms.

Angel de Tejadillo bar.

by Zap-b about Angel de Tejadillo bar.

I had this bar recommended to me by a local who said it was raelly cheap - well well right he was. Its a peso bar where beer costs just 10 pesos and a shot of rum just 2-3 pesos. It was recommended after we had being talking about Cuban music and the Beuna Vista Social Club as apparently some of the old guys from that group drink here and I can well believe it. Its supposed to have good live music around 8pm though I can't vouch for that as I was firmly on the midnight to 4am shift in this bar! It was fun though - very drunken. I spent my last evening here too and when upon leaving and enquiring about a taxi I got one of the guys I had been talking to take me - he was a very drunken (at that stage) bicitaxi - luckily I was too - and the bicitaxi zig-zagged back to where I was staying to leave for the airport. Its a good friendly bar and although I did have people try to get free drinks out of me, people are in general pretty decent and unselfishly friendly None - good ordinary Cuba bar!

first time to cuba

by mazandpaul

hi!
we are planning to go to Havana in may 2005, for ten days. The hotel Tejadillo looks good, has anyone stayed there? also, how much spanish will we need? does anyone speak english, or do we really have to learn more than just the basics?
thanks for all advice!

Hotel Tejadillo is a cute small place by Habaguanex. All hotels of Habaguanex are historical places ... good choice!

In Havana you can manage with English, like all touristic places in Cuba, English is fine. Take a small dictionary with you for just in case that ...

For more info on Cuba check my outer website www.cuba-junky.com. You still have plenty of time

Hey... I travelled tp Cuba in March of this year, and i found that english is okay if you stick to the areas are mainly geared towards tourists, but the further away you go from these areas, the more spanish you will need, at least according to what i found.

Don't know how interested you are in learning, but I have been studying spanish for awhile, and i picked up the living learning cd set, and i pop it in in the car, and it actually seems kind of helpful. got it at barnes and noble if your interested. :-)

It's always good to know the language, although you can somehow get by without knowing much in tourist area. And definitely bring a phrasebook with you, it helped me a lot when I was in Havana. A lot of the museums don't have English signs and descriptions of their exhibits, that's the drawback. So bring a travel guidebook with you.
