Telegrafo good location

We stayed 3 nights at the Telegrafo Hotel Havana February 2011.
The hotel is in a good central location the room was a decent size and clean but a bit tired ! the drawers fell completely to bits but were repaired quite quickly.
The bar area is architecturally very interesting.
We had breakfast at the Hotel the food and service was a bit below average

TOP TIP
I have read reports of cash been stolen from hotels in Cuba and also small amounts from safes
( I once had £10 taken from our safe in the Dominican Republic)
In order to combat small amounts of money taken from the safe what I do is put all my valuables in a plastic bag and fit a tie wrap around the neck of the bag this stops the contents from been tampered with. It will not of course stop wholesale theft ! (tie wraps are generally used to tie cables together I bought a box of approx 200 from the £1 shop )

More about Telegrafo Boutique Hotel Havana

Good place for the first days, right in the centre

by Takalaga about Hotel Telegrafo

When entering into Cuba, you have to have a place to stay for the first two or three nights (this may be checked by customs..). Basically any place would do (even a casa particular), but when you go there for the first time it certainly would not be a mistake to chose one of the established hotels. We spent our first two night at Hotel Telegrafo, which seemed like a good choice to me since it offers good value for money, and is quite central. I would recommend two or three nights there, whilst looking for a casa particular for the following days. Also, this makes the "culture shock" a lot easier to handle...

Hotel Telegrafo-Old Havana

by Pixiego about The Telegrafo

This hotel was recently renovated so it is fairly modern. It has computers in the cafe/bar, the rooms where nice, and it is on a central location along the Prado which is a street that goes through Old Havana.
It is actually considered a hostel. The rooms are big- compared to most which are fairly small. We where here most of our stay in Havana.

HAVANA....I will be back

by florry

For me ..i can just walk around the streets of habana..or more like walking the malecon from vedado to habana vija starting with some water at hotel telegrafo...maybe sending some e-mails there or the capitol. Then walking around some more..coffee somewhere..maybe a beer in a bar..meeting some friends..maybe many more drinks..or just more walking around..i love the mornings..the smell on the malecon..the waves coming over there..i got used to walking on the street. because its so slippery sometimes I think just looking at the cuban people makes you walk more sexy..as u normaly would walk..well i think i moved my hips much more etc..its just in the air..like the music..and another thing i love soo much is a rocking chair..i spend plenty time in it..and it made me relax soo much..waiting..for whatever.. Cooking dinner in my friends houses.. and beeing bought out for dinner and nightclub from my cuban boyfriend. It meant a lot to me as i know they dont have much to give. so after giving so much it was just so nice to get too:)but i cant say this is my foundes memory..because i really have loads more...

loved the view

by TripAdvisor Member cubanjunky

I went to the hotel telegrafo for the second time in january. My room was even better then the one before..i just loved the view on parque centrel..you are close to everything. the food is fine not to cheap but no different as other hotels. I only stayed 2 night and then stayed privat but still called in there every day for using the internet..and having a drink outside. people are helpfull and very friendly there..i can only recomend it..

Great Location, let down by bad service

by TripAdvisor Member AaroninDublin

I stayed in The Telegrafo on June 16th and 17th 2005. My room looked out onto Parque Centeral, so I had great views of old Habana. My room was clean and very mod. The only downside was the customer service. Most of the staff were unfriendly, unhelpfull and made you feel like you were bothering them. Its a real pitty because the hotel is of good quality, resonably priced and in a fantastic location. I would recomend the hotel, but they need to work on the service they give to paying guests.

Great Location, good rooms

by TripAdvisor Member rosieh

Stayed only for one night but liked this hotel because:
- really good location on Parque Central. We had a 3rd floor room facing the park with great views.
- 2 nice bars - one an indoor patio bar, the other a pavement bar
- decent breakfast choice (omelettes cooked to order)
- modern, clean room and bathroom
- safe deposit box free and you programme your own code (we had money stolen from hotel Sevilla where the safe was operated by room card key)
- friendly and helpful concierge

The downsides:
- air con wasn't brilliant (and when we opened the window a gust of wind caused our bathroom ceiling to start lifting up!)
- no plug for the bath, and the shower was more of a dribble..

Am just pointing out the downsides because these things matter to some people! Accepting that this is Havana, I found the overall standard at Telegrafo very good.

Preferred it here to Sevilla.

found: che guevara's revolution bathtowel

by TripAdvisor Member emandem

stayed for a week in november 05. great location and interesting (if not very comfy)street level with courtyard and cafe. something not quite right with the staff though - quite off hand at reception and in the restaurant. food was pretty good for cuban standards. The bedlinen and towels not too clean or soft, unlike
other cuban hotels - in fact i think i got che guevara's revolution towel one day, as it was full of holes !
Rooms are basic with sort of retro 50s decor, and quiet if off street.Outside is central park, national theatre, short walks to all the big museums, old city - and Chinatown.

this are ana and Pepe , i stayed in there Casa for a month this time and i must say i made some very good friends with them.As allways i stay for 2 nights in the hotel telegrafo before moving to a casa. This people where there for me all the time, me having problems with friends from last year who took advantage off me thinking i am just full off money and can buy drinks for all there friends too. so i had to put a stop on that but of course it upset me. then i had a boyfriend there but he didnt have much english and my spanish was little so we had some problems too. but there where my friends allways cheering me up and they got to know me well enough to say when i was sad..barbara cook some dinner for us or the guests knowing i can forget everything for a while when i cook. the same when i got robbed of my cmaera, phone, money etc on the malecon in the daytime. i just couldnt get over it that a i lost all my photos..didnt care about money or phone ..but i had no photo to bring back. after that i felt soo empty..i gave everything to all the people i met..but i came home empty. But even before i went to habana i thought it will be my last trip for a while there..because it just cost to much etc. I think i am not finished with habana and i will go back..just to see the friends i made last time..because there are important to me..and maybe the man who made me smile a lot ther too..william:)But after beeing there now for the 3th time i see more then just a tourist is going to see..and it makes me sad sometimes too. But i do love the people there, knowing there have to use there charm to make the money for there living.i do love the music in the air everywhere you go..the dancing..and i am well used to the kssskssss etc.so i think i will go again.i need some more photos..and i had such good ones:(another thing..i hope they will restore more buildings in habana because its looking bad now..every year i see more and more building falling apart

looking for a good hotel in or near chinatown, havana

by najavuh

I will be in Havana, Cuba soon. I need to book a room at a hotel near Chinatown in Havana, Cuba. I would appreciate recommendation.

Please post reply and a copy to my email address najavuh@gmail.com

As pedmar mentioned, there are plenty of hotels located near the Capitol, only a short walk away from Chinatown. Some of the best-known ones are the Telegrafo, Hotel Inglaterra, Hotel Sevilla, and NH Parque Central. I guess it mostly depends on your budget and what type of accommodations you're looking for...

Re: looking for a good hotel in or near chinatown, havana

by najavuh

The reason I want to make hotel reservation in advance because I am told I must have an address in Cuba in order to pass Cuban custom. This was the rule four years ago. Does this rule still apply today?

I would prefer to go to Havana and look around for hotel in person.

Thank you both for your help.
